Description bugzilla 2001-08-26 15:57:21 UTC
The Referer field in the HTTP headers is not filled in when using
open-in-a-new-window or open-in-a-new-tab function in the popup-menu of a link.
Comment 1 Yanko Kaneti 2001-08-26 16:11:58 UTC
no modern day browser does send a referrer when "opening link in a new
window/tab"

Comment 4 Sebastian Wilhelmi 2001-12-13 07:57:08 UTC
I'm sorry to argue about that. With 'modern day browser' you obviously
mean mozilla, as both IE 6.0 and opera 5.05 do send the referer in
that case. mozilla doesn't, but there this is considered a bug. See

       http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48902

But I'm not sure, whether galeon can fix that, or if that is mozilla's
fault. I'm reopening the bug in any case......
Comment 5 Yanko Kaneti 2001-12-13 09:00:31 UTC
well, they didnt when i tested (August)
that must have been IE 5.0 and Opera 5 and Netscape 4

what about now:
"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0)" does

"Opera/6.0 (Linux 2.2.18-1smp i686; U) [en]" doesnt

"Mozilla/4.77 [en] (X11; U; Linux 2.2.18-1smp i686)" also doesnt

i'd agree we probably need this
Comment 6 Yanko Kaneti 2001-12-13 09:47:33 UTC
just to note that this will probably require modifications of the
mozilla interfaces we use so i dont see it in the immediate future

masschange ganeral -> galeon-maint@bugzilla.gnome.org (which is currently me)

sorry for the spam
Comment 9 daniel 2002-05-19 13:45:46 UTC
As of 0.9.9 (if not earlier), Mozilla does set the referer field on
'open in new window' and 'open in new tab', but galeon still doesn't,
so it looks like a galeon bug.

'open in new window' should look the same to the web site receiving a
click as open a site in the same window.

This may be of interest, not sure if we can use it though.

this bug is currently making it difficult to browse the somethingawful
forums, where a referrer is required to reply to a post. I can no
longer browse a thread, middle click on a post I want to reply to, and
continue to read the thread.

Is there a real reason why a referrer shouldn't be sent? To the user,
the act of middle-clicking a link differs from left-clicking only in
that a new window is opened up for the destination link. It's not the
same in my mind as opening a new window, pasting the new url, and
hitting enter.

Galeon has not seen any code changes since May 2010:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/archive/galeon/log

This project is not under active development anymore and got recently archived in GNOME Git.

It is currently unlikely that there will be any further active development.

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect
reality. Please feel free to reopen this bug report in the future if anyone
takes the responsibility for active development again.
