GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 41063
The right click desktop menu needs more commands to match gmc
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
The GMC desktop and the window manager support a right-button and middle-button context menus that contain more or less useful command. We should either enable those to work with the Nautilus Desktop or replace them with our own version. The GMC right-click button offers features like New Terminal, New Link, New Directory, background image (all feature we will easily replace/improve). The window manager middle click offers features like a menu to access all open windows. We might be best off just making the window manager menu work on the Desktop. I'm sure it would be trivial for John Harper to fix. ------- Additional Comments From darin@bentspoon.com 2000-06-15 13:32:48 ---- I wrote a new bug 41385 about the middle click which I think is a separate issue. ------- Additional Comments From darin@bentspoon.com 2000-07-11 16:31:53 ---- I'll let you look into this one. ------- Additional Comments From darin@bentspoon.com 2000-07-24 12:46:03 ---- GMC has following features: New Terminal (makes window) New Directory (makes icon on desktop) New URI Link (makes icon on desktop) New Launcher (makes icon in panel) Arrange Icons Create New Window (makes new gmc window) Rescan Desktop Directory (like Reload in Nautilus) Rescan Devices Recreate Default Icons Configure Background Image Many of these seem useful, but we probably need separate tasks for each one we think is required instead of a single bug. ------- Additional Comments From pavel@eazel.com 2000-07-25 13:28:40 ---- I can just pick a good set looking at the GMC menu. ------- Additional Comments From darin@bentspoon.com 2000-07-26 10:37:50 ---- Pavel, I'm not sure what your remark means. These commands are not all trivial to implement, so at some point we need to decide which features to add and make separate bugs for them. The 2 hour time estimate for this bug seems very strange to me. ------- Additional Comments From arlo@workthatmouse.com 2000-07-26 10:40:48 ---- The two hour estimate was for me to write up the contents of the menu. ------- Additional Comments From arlo@workthatmouse.com 2000-07-26 11:40:52 ---- My proposal for the Nautilus Desktop Context Menu is as follows: New Folder New Document <List of installed Apps that allow this> - Manual Layout Auto Position by Name by Size by Type by Modification Date by Emblems - Zoom In Zoom Out Normal Size - Check for removable media Update Desktop (I’d like to get rid of this) - Change Desktop Background… Note that I'd like to make the normal context menu look something like thios as well... but I'll file another bug. ------- Additional Comments From arlo@workthatmouse.com 2000-07-26 11:59:30 ---- Reposting to get rid of Mac formatting issues: New Folder New Document <List of installed Apps that allow this> - Manual Layout Auto Position by Name by Size by Type by Modification Date by Emblems - Zoom In Zoom Out Normal Size - Check for removable media Update Desktop (I’d like to get rid of this) - Change Desktop Background... ------- Additional Comments From sullivan@eazel.com 2000-07-26 12:40:45 ---- This bug describes the desired layout of the desktop context menu. I'm writing separate bug reports for each of the new features so we can decide when/whether to do them individually. For the ones we decide to do, we should use the layout defined here. I've set the time estimate to "No more required" since implementing each feature is reported separately. ------- Additional Comments From sullivan@eazel.com 2000-07-26 12:54:41 ---- Note that bug 41065 is about the New Folder item being in the wrong part of the context menu; fixing this will make it appear in the Desktop's context menu correctly. ------- Additional Comments From arlo@workthatmouse.com 2000-07-26 13:17:25 ---- Another addition in the first tier: New Folder New Terminal (For Hacker Mode Only) New Document <List of installed Apps that allow this> - ------- Additional Comments From sullivan@eazel.com 2000-07-26 13:36:04 ---- Here are some of the bugs about specific new features required for this design: bug 41787 ("New Document") bug 41789 (support for Zoom in Desktop) bug 41790 ("Check for removable media") bug 41791 ("Change Desktop Background") bug 41792 ("New Terminal") ------- Additional Comments From sullivan@eazel.com 2000-07-26 13:38:42 ---- Oh, yeah, also bug 41671 (auto-arrange for Desktop) ------- Additional Comments From pavel@eazel.com 2000-07-27 03:39:02 ---- oops, missed johns comment about why he set the time to none required. I didn't do it for the K-Locks, I swear ------- Additional Comments From pavel@eazel.com 2000-07-27 03:42:02 ---- Actually, "New Folder" is listed here but is not in the menu -> requires work. ------- Additional Comments From pavel@eazel.com 2000-07-27 05:49:26 ---- Fixed the "New Folder", everything else is covered by separate bugs. ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2000-10-16 19:35:27 ---- Batch-assigning QA ownership of remaining bugs to eli@eazel.com ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2001-02-09 11:29:03 ---- Duane is now the proud owner for Desktop QA. ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-09-09 20:33 ------- The original reporter (pavel@eazel.com) of this bug does not have an account here.
