GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 792388
Refine the conversation view
Last modified: 2021-07-05 13:25:25 UTC
The work porting Geary to use GTK widgets for the conversation viewer (in support the move to WK2) was somewhat ad-hoc, and there's a number of outstanding issues with the current UX that could be tidied up. With plans to add additional features (e.g. PGP), this the UX will only get messier. It would be good to collect a list of requirements outlining how we'd like the conversation viewer, then come up with a solid design that works well given those requirements, then implement that. The GNOME Mail design would be a good starting point: https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/Apps/Mail#Tentative_Design I'll start collecting requirements as dependencies of this bug, if anyone has other suggestions please do mention them here.
One thing I'd particularly like to address is the issue with sizing of individual message panes. One of the technical challenges with the WebKit2 port was that WK2 now handles scrolling internally, so it's difficult to determine the correct height of the message body and when it changes. This in turn makes it difficult to size and manage scrolling of messages in the conversation viewer. If this technical issue can't be addressed, we might need to convert the conversation viewer to a different UX, perhaps one where an individual message usually always take up the full height of the conversation viewer, minus space to indicate previous and next messages. That's a pretty substantial change however and so would need to be well thought out.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/geary/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
