The layout is bad, though it's more a problem of aesthetics than economy. I mean, we don't *need* the space for anything; it's just ugly. ;)

Thankfully, there is a new design that's waiting to be implemented that will solve the issue:

The configuration part of the new design has now been implemented (see bug 657916). I'd say this report is now obsolete.
