Description Hammer Attila 2009-07-22 11:48:54 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Dear Developers!

In this morning I update the development Orca source tree with git pull command, and see git log output. I see following bug fix:
"commit 4ad8eb27df1f53b115eb0b403dcdc2d693725c46
Author: Joanmarie Diggs <joanmarie.diggs@gmail.com>
Date: Mon Jul 20 11:42:42 2009 -0400

Fix for bgo#582506 - Use GtkBuilder instead of libglade"

When I ran intltool-update hu command with po directory, I see only 1134 translated messages, and 3 fuzzy messages with intltool-update command output. It is very interesting, because yesterday intltool-update hu command shows 1277 translated messages.

The following translated messages get an #~ mark with the hungarian translation file:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Please update orca source code with latest branch.
2. cd the po directory, and do an intltool-update any language, for example intltool-update hu command.
3.

Will, you are very fast. :-):-)
I update Orca source code and looks intltool-update hu command again.
After I unmark 3 fuzzy messages again (Default, Hiperlink and Uppercase translation texts), I see now 1276 translated messages with intltool-update hu output.
I think this bug you fixed, thank you.

Comment 8 Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2009-07-22 13:42:50 UTC
Will's the best!!

Attila, I believe the reason for those 3 fuzzy messages is this: Files in the glade format can include the items in combo boxes (like Default, Hyperlink, and Uppercase from the voice type combo box on the speech page of Orca Preferences). This is apparently not possible with GtkBuilder. As a result, I had to move the strings. When I did so, I considered that those three strings were awfully vague: "Default," "Hyperlink," and "Uppercase" can apply to various circumstances, they might be adjectives in one case and nouns in another case, etc. So in the process of moving them, I marked them as qualified strings so that I could explain in the translator note what these three strings applied to, namely voice type. Sorry for any inconvenience/confusion.

And I'm really, really sorry for this bug. I learn new things about translation strings all the time. :-) Thanks again Will!

Sorry, the patch didn't solve the Problem on my machine.

I have
#: ../src/orca/orca-setup.glade.h:135
msgid "Speak object under mo_use"
msgstr "Objekt unter Ma_us vorlesen"

./src/orca/orca-setup.glade.h should be removed by joanie's patch or not?

Some more strings are not translated by this problem.
Any Idea's?

Is it possible you may have forgotten to do a make clean prior to a git pull and/or rerunning autogen.sh after doing a git pull? Here's what I see after doing those things followed by an "intltool-update -po" in the po directory:

#: ../src/orca/orca-setup.ui.h:101
msgid "Speak object under mo_use"
msgstr ""
Comment 12 Halim Sahin 2009-07-22 16:40:28 UTC
I haven't forgotten something, because I did a clean git clone git://git.gnome.org/orca.git
running cd po && intltoo-update -po did not change anything in my de.po file. Running intltool-update de changed something but the new strings don't work after installing orca.
No I have the following in my de.po:
#: ../src/orca/orca-setup.ui.h:101
msgid "Speak object under mo_use"
msgstr "Objekt unter Ma_us vorlesen"

Any way it doesn't have any effect!
Comment 13 Halim Sahin 2009-07-22 18:06:57 UTC
It seems that all po files should be regenerated to eliminate all references to glade stuff.
The patch is really big so i want to tell you what I did:
1. git clone .../orca
2. cd orca && ./autogen.sh
3. cd po
4. for i in *.po;do;intltool-update $(basename "$i" .po);done
this has updated all files but I am getting again some ntranslated messages.
Comment 14 Willie Walker 2009-07-22 18:48:06 UTC
Hmmm...very strange. Attila - are you observing this as well?

> Hmmm...very strange. Attila - are you observing this as well?

BTW, Halim - can you verify something for me? I want to see if it's just strings in the GtkBuilder *.ui files that aren't being presented in their translated form.

Using git master...

Try running the Orca console-based setup using "orca -t". This has strings marked for translation directly in the Python code. See if these strings are translated when Orca speaks.

Then, open the Orca preferences GUI and see if the strings there are translated. If only some are translated and not others, this would be very odd, and it would be great if you could provide some specific examples.

Thanks!

Your questions Will regarding orca-t: All strings were translated correctly

Orca-setup has some untranslated strings: E. G.

Q: Why does a fresh checkout of orca from git eliminate all comments about glad? Is there a intltool-update missing?

While the po directory is something under the Orca source directory, we're pretty much restricted to what changes we can make to it. Other than updating the POTFILES.in file, my understanding is that anything else in this directory is off limits to anyone except the GNOME translation team. So, an intltool-update is something I don't believe we're allowed to do.

However, the po files should not need to be regenerated. They work solely off the msgctx, msgid, and msgstr lines. The lines beginning with "#" are comments. Since no strings should have changed, I believe intltool-update will basically keep the msgctx, msgid, and msgstr lines the same -- only the comments would change (I hope).

To clarify, when you ran "orca -t", all the strings were spoken in the locale as you expected?

Is it just "some" of the strings or "all" of the strings? If it's just "some", which strings seem to be translated correctly?

I was finally able to remember the magic command needed to adjust the locale:

LANG=de.UTF-8 ./bld/bin/orca

So, to answer my own questions, it does appear as though the strings coming from the GtkBuilder *,ui files are not being translated whereas all other strings are.

So, there's probably something we're missing in setting up the l10n context for gettext for the GtkBuilder stuff.

Bizarro stuff being done here -- hope we don't have to do it:

Seems to be a common problem:

Bug #574520
Comment 22 Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2009-07-23 03:06:34 UTC
Interesting. Love the comment (which seems like the very same thing we're facing):

        # Work around a deeply mysterious bug that prevents strings in the
	# GtkBuilder file from being translated even though calling
	# gettext.gettext manually gives a translation.
	# TODO: Remove this sh*t once GtkBuilder works properly.

(Note that I've edited the original swear word because Orca is family-friendly.)

Will and Halim, sorry my slow answer.
The following strings (Halim wroted this examples) and all strings translated correct my machine with hungarian language when I press Orca+Space key combination:
#: ../src/orca/orca-setup.ui.h:101
msgid "Speak object under mo_use"
msgstr "Az e_gér alatti objektum felolvasása"

#: ../src/orca/orca-setup.ui.h:103
msgid "Speak tutorial messages"
msgstr "Oktatói üzenetek kimondásának engedélyezése"

I using now Ubuntu Jaunty, intltool-update version is 0.40.6, gettext version is 0.17-6ubuntu2.

I am seeing two problems here:
1. the po files should regenerated after switching to gtkbuilder.
(no manually running of intltool-update)
2. The strings from orca-setup.ui Problem.
I.ll do more tests today.
Thanks

I believe we need to wait for the translators to do that. In addition, it currently should not make a difference since all the strings should be the same -- see comment #18.

No need to test for now. In comment #19, comment #20, comment #21, and comment #22 we've determined there's an oddity with GtkBuilder that we need to work around.

Now that it's Friday I have time again. Yea!

Will, thanks for all the research you did into this issue! Today/this weekend I'm going to see if I can implement the aforementioned <strike>hack</strike> fix. Assigning to myself.

most of the hack

This hack seems to pull in most of the labels correctly. There are just a handful that are not. I am still working on this. Also, this patch causes a handful of labels that used to be bold to no longer be bold. I'm working on this as well.

Hopefully in the meantime, this will make things better.

Rest of the hack: Restore bold and our wayward frame labels

This patch restores the few wayward frame labels that refused to be translated earlier. It also restores bold where it belongs. Tested with English, Spanish, French, German, and Brazilian Portuguese. Already committed to master.

As far as I know, this is the last of the issues related to this bug. Could those of you reading this message, especially if you're using a locale other than en_US, give the latest git master a spin and confirm? Thanks!

Joanmarie, after I update latest Orca source code, all strings translated correct with hungarian language. Thank you.

Awesome! Thanks for checking Attila!!

Based on your findings, plus what I've seen with the other locales I've tested, I'm going to tentatively close this bug as FIXED.

If anyone finds strings that were translated correctly just before the GtkBuilder conversion that are no longer translated correctly, then this bug should be re-opened. Thanks!
Comment 31 Hammer Attila 2009-07-26 06:02:54 UTC
Joanmarie, I found one string (this string always untranslated spokening), but this string is presented my translation file and I translated:
#. Translators: this attribute specifies there is something "wrong" with
#. the text, such as it being a misspelled word. See:
#.
#: ../src/orca/text_attribute_names.py:133
msgctxt "textattr"
msgid "mistake"
msgstr "Hiba:"

I am not sure this string problem of this bug competence or a separate bug, please answer this. If this is a separate bug ant not gtkbuilder migration problem, I open new bugreport with this problem.
If I use for example with Thunderbird application and write "Netbook Remix" words with mistakes (netbook remix the correct words), when I navigating this words, Orca correct says the mistake hint ("hibásan írt szó" in hungarian translation). When I press one right arrow and press Orca+f key combination, orca says following text attribute:
"mistake betűtévesztés."
The "betűtévesztés" is the hungarian translation (this is correct), the mistake is the untranslated string part.
If the translation of this string work right (now not work), Orca wish says: "hiba: betűtévesztés."

Comment 32 Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2009-07-26 06:52:11 UTC
This is a new string. Before we presented misspelled words in Gecko as "invalid" because that is what Gecko calls them. Will recently suggested that "invalid" was confusing and that we should instead use "mistake". His suggestion was made in reference to bug 588910 in which we now present misspelled words (the red, squiggly underlined words) in Gecko. Because it was easy enough to change as part of that bug (rather than create a new bug to make this string change), I did so.

Thank you Joanmarie. I copyed my prewious comment with bug 588910 bugreport.
