Description Pedro de Medeiros 2008-02-03 22:38:20 UTC
The second sentence of each of these translations are always the same. That's a lot of unnecessary work and error inducing.

#: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:41
msgid ""
"The global keybinding for creating and displaying a new Note. The format "
"looks like \"<Control>a\" or \"<Shift><Alt>F1\". The "
"parser is fairly liberal and allows lower or upper case, and also "
"abbreviations such as \"<Ctl>\" and \"<Ctrl>\". If you set the "
"option to the special string \"disabled\", then there will be no keybinding "
"for this action."
#: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:42
msgid ""
"The global keybinding for opening the \"Start Here\" note. The format looks "
"like \"<Control>a\" or \"<Shift><Alt>F1\". The parser is "
"fairly liberal and allows lower or upper case, and also abbreviations such "
"as \"<Ctl>\" and \"<Ctrl>\". If you set the option to the "
"special string \"disabled\", then there will be no keybinding for this "
"action."
#: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:43
msgid ""
"The global keybinding for opening the Note Search dialog. The format looks "
"like \"<Control>a\" or \"<Shift><Alt>F1\". The parser is "
"fairly liberal and allows lower or upper case, and also abbreviations such "
"as \"<Ctl>\" and \"<Ctrl>\". If you set the option to the "
"special string \"disabled\", then there will be no keybinding for this "
"action."
#: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:44
msgid ""
"The global keybinding for opening the Recent Changes dialog.
#: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:45
msgid ""
"The global keybinding for showing the Tomboy applet's menu. The format looks "
"like \"<Control>a\" or \"<Shift><Alt>F1\". The parser is "
"fairly liberal and allows lower or upper case, and also abbreviations such "
"as \"<Ctl>\" and \"<Ctrl>\". If you set the option to the "
"special string \"disabled\", then there will be no keybinding for this "
"action."

And this behaviour seems to be wrong:

#: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:50
msgid ""
"The note URI of the note that should be considered the \"Start Here\" note, "
"which is always placed at the bottom of the Tomboy note menu and also "
"accessible by hotkey."

Isn't the "Start Here" note actually at the top of the list?

"Plugin" and "addin" are both being used with no distinction. I suggest adopting only one of them:

Need a comment here that says it refers to link:

#: ../Tomboy/Addins/Backlinks/BacklinksNoteAddin.cs:83
msgid "(none)"

Replace this tag with "<b>":

#: ../Tomboy/Addins/NoteOfTheDay/NoteOfTheDayPreferences.cs:16
msgid ""
"Change the <span weight=\"bold\">Today: Template</span> note to customize "
"the text that new Today notes have."

What is this? Is it translatable? Please add a comment.

#: ../Tomboy/Addins/PrintNotes/gedit-print.c:445
#, no-c-format
msgid "%A %x, %X"

No singular form for:

#: ../Tomboy/Addins/StickyNoteImport/StickyNoteImportNoteAddin.cs:144
#, csharp-format
msgid "<b>{0}</b> of <b>{1}</b> Sticky Notes were successfully imported."

No spaces at the end of the string please. It's error inducing.

#: ../Tomboy/Addins/StickyNoteImport/StickyNoteImportNoteAddin.cs:185
msgid "Sticky Note: "

Why is the keybindings part of the translation? They should be at least, separated.

#: ../Tomboy/NoteWindow.cs:442
msgid "Search your notes (Ctrl-Shift-F)"
#: ../Tomboy/NoteWindow.cs:455
msgid "Link selected text to a new note (Ctrl-L)"

Space is error inducing.

#: ../Tomboy/Tray.cs:64
msgid " (new)"
#: ../Tomboy/Synchronization/SyncDialog.cs:508
msgid " (old)"
#: ../Tomboy/Addins/Bugzilla/BugzillaPreferences.cs:257
msgid "Could not save the icon file. "
Comment 1 Pedro de Medeiros 2008-02-03 22:43:11 UTC
Why is "auto" upper case?

#: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:3
msgid "Enable Auto bulleted lists."
Comment 2 Pedro de Medeiros 2008-02-04 14:51:54 UTC
#: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:15
msgid "HTML Export Last Directory"

This string is confusing. Seems like a command, but it is not. And some translators have interpreted it wrong. I suggest we change it to:

"Last Directory used in HTML Export"

It's almost the same size and much clearer.

Comment 4 Jeff Tickle 2008-04-05 19:10:56 UTC
What's the story with tomboy.schemas.in.h? I guess it must be generated at some point, which makes this difficult to fix with the format of tomboy.schemas.in. Any ideas?

Fixed ../Tomboy/Addins/Backlinks/BacklinksNoteAddin.cs:83

Fixed ../Tomboy/Addins/NoteOfTheDay/NoteOfTheDayPreferences.cs:16

../Tomboy/Addins/PrintNotes/gedit-print.c:445
This looks like it's a date format, which means it definitely shouldn't be translated. Aren't there functions for getting a localized date? Unfortunately I don't know much about this sort of thing.

Fixed ../Tomboy/Addins/StickyNoteImport/StickyNoteImportNoteAddin.cs:144

Fixed ../Tomboy/NoteWindow.cs:442
Fixed ../Tomboy/NoteWindow.cs:455
For now, I went ahead and just separated the keybinding part out of the translatable text, like this:

Catalog.GetString("Search your notes") + " (Ctrl + Shift + F)"

It seems to me that this should be configurable, but it's not right now. Is this an acceptable fix?

../Tomboy/Tray.cs:64, and the other "space at the end" problems
How should this be handled? Is the following acceptable:

" " + Catalog.GetString("(new)");

Fixed: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:3
Changed to "Enable automatic bulleted lists"

Fixed: ../data/tomboy.schemas.in.h:15

I'm not going to commit any of these yet, but see attachment for a patch.

Comment 8 F Wolff 2011-08-31 09:21:50 UTC
Thanks for the work on this so far.

The issue with the ending sentence is not trivial to fix, since joining the sentences in code is not ideal (some languages have spaces between sentences, others not). Ideally translation tools should support reuse at the sentence level, but I'm not aware of one that does that yet (I have that in mind for Virtaal in future, though).

The remaining ones look easy to fix, especially the spaces.

"%A %x, %X" looks like a time format string. A comment to refer to strftime would be useful already (if that is the case).

The string freeze is in a few days. Would it be possible to look into this in time for the upcoming string freeze?
