GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 472289
Desktop icons not aligned properly
Last modified: 2012-09-19 19:59:12 UTC
Please describe the problem: When I right-click on the desktop and select "Clean Up By Name", regardless of whether "Keep Aligned" is checked or not, the vertical distance between some icons is irregular. This is a screenshot of the problem: http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/9219/screenshot1kt8.png The gap between "Downloaded" and "Google Earth" is much larger than the gap between "Screenshot.png" and "Google Earth". Not all icons exhibit this. Steps to reproduce: 1. Create a folder link named "Downloaded" 2. Create a Google Earth icon 3. Make sure there are no other icons alphabetically in between those two 4. Clean Up By Name Actual results: Icons are aligned but incorrectly. If there is more than one column of icons then they are not horizontally aligned, regardless of the state of "Keep Aligned". Expected results: I would expect either all the gaps to be of similar height, or all the icons being horizontally aligned, depending on the state of "Keep Aligned". Does this happen every time? It happens every time with the same icons. Other information:
Intel Pentium III Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Gnome 2.24.1 Problems on the Desktop: 1. "Keep aligned" (obtained by right-clicking on the desktop): This does not work. Also, this should be the default, I believe. Consider Mac OS X. Icons on the desktop are always aligned. 2. "Text beside icons" (obtained by opening File Browser/Nautilus and clicking on edit->preferences): Again, while this might work in the File Browser, it is ignored on the Desktop. There should be an option for this, either on the Desktop itself, in gconf-editor, or somewhere appropriate. Again, not that we're fanboys or anything, but consider Mac OS X. Besides, the option is already there so let's make it work or at least be more consistent.
Intel Pentium 4 Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron Gnome 2.22.3 I think icons should be organized automatically. Also, noticed that when a new device is mounted the new icon overlaps the rest of the icons in my desktop.. that is quite annoying and looks messy. I really would like this to be fixed. An idea would be, instead of having a new icon each time it could appear a new icon in the system tray, so my desktop icons will remain always in the same place. Thanks for your work, guys. Regards.
