GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 129937
desktop icons don't align to grid
Last modified: 2018-01-02 18:50:20 UTC
Icon themes differ by their icon height, and icons on the desktop gets unaligned back even if Keep Aligned option is selected. Nautilus needs to somehow Auto-realign desktop icons to grid on icon-theme changes when desktop is kept aligned :)
Id love to see this bug fixed if I may just chime in, keep up the good work I love gnome, its just the little minor things that are buggin me :D
I too just wanted to chime in and say that currently even in GNOME 2.26.1 with "Keep Aligned" checked, it doesn't update dynamically if you move around icons out of place. It needs to be forcing icons to the grid position (even though it isn't really a grid at the moment).
related to Bug #601469 . I confirm this bug on Ubuntu 9.10
Dear all, please see Bug 613111

As of 3.22 it looks like Nautilus does enforce horizontal alignment, but it lets things be positioned anywhere vertically and does not align them.
I guess that could be related to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350719 - though I'd expect alignment on a grid to work properly in both the main and secondary orientation in any case.
Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
