Description Sebastien Bacher 2007-04-18 12:45:11 UTC
The bug has been described on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/epiphany-browser/+bug/105323

"...
When using with LANGUAGE=pt_BR.UTF-8 epiphany it works, but it still would be good to have epiphany in english and set the spell dictionary in spellchecker.dictionary."

Actually the title of this bug is misleading. The original bugreporter asks for solving an issue where one isn't able to change spellchecking language in about:config (while in Firefox it's OK) and not for an additional feature at all.

And if you look more carefully, #531031 is a duplicate of this one (and should be given some love as it isn't solved yet in 2.26.1), while #511206 is certainly not and should NOT be marked as a duplicate of this. Please reopen this or #531031.

Why not add a general place where configure spell checking under gnome-control-center for configuring it for all gnome apps (like evolution, epiphany, gedit...) ?

I like the idea, but I think the use cases for the various apps can be very different, so it's not a one-size-fits-all preference. Why don't you file an enhancement bug for this?

I am not sure what you want to configure there. The request is about changing the spell-checker to the language you need in a specific situation. I think I'm not the only one, I regularly switch between four different languages, of which three are not my mother tongue, so spell-checking in those languages is definitely needed and I need a quick and painless way to switch. In Firefox I can to so through the context menu: right-click -> languages -> [choose the language you want]. going to the control centre for that purpose would be impractical.

In fact, there is one thing I like about Evolution: you can activate several languages at a time, which comes in quite handy if you use more than one language in an e-mail, something I do all the time. But for text areas you edit in epiphany, this would probably not be too urgent.

Anyway, a decent solution would be highly welcome, because the amount of writing you do in the browser is constantly on the rise -> Wikipedia, GMail, blogs, bugzilla etc. So a decent spell checking function should be seen not as an optional goody but as an essential aspect of functionality.

In my case (only for english and spanish) I prefer "evolution way", I simply ask it for checking both languages at the same time... and is really great to not need to change setting anymore ;-)

But you are true, it's for a different bug report (that I'll probably open tomorrow)

We have UI for this nowadays.
