GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 318700
Changing CPU speeds causes dancing applet position
Last modified: 2007-01-17 14:09:52 UTC
Distribution/Version: FC4 I'm using FC4 with gnome-applets-2.10.1-9. I have lots of applets in my panel, and the CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor applet is right in the middle. When the CPU frequency changes causing the width to change of the CPU freq applet, then all of my applets to the left of it dance back and forth. It would be nice if the CPU Freq applet always used the same amount of horizontal space independent of current CPU speed. 2 Ghz (2nd smallest) 1.80 Ghz (biggest ... 1.20 Ghz (bigger) 1 Ghz (smallest) 800 Mhz (slightly wider due to proportional spaced font) 600 Mhz (the normal when my laptop is mostly idle)
I confirm this bug on ubuntu dapper. Although I upgraded the latest version, still I have the same problem. Furthermore, once it happened, I cannot remove the applet for a while, because the applet does not respond to my right button clock.

Created attachment 76824 [details] [review] Fixes varying width of the applet Just stumbled upon the same problem and just tried to fix it. Attached is a little patch which adds functionality (to cpufreq-utils) to obtain the maximum label width for the appropriate display modes. Maybe this is of any use.
Hi Maik, thanks a lot for the patch. I think the whole applet should request a fixed size instead of the labels. I've just committed to cvs head a fix based on your idea.
