GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 232841
Automatically encrypt my outgoing messages
Last modified: 2016-03-11 11:43:08 UTC
Package: Evolution Priority: Normal Version: 1.0.8 Synopsis: Need better UI for encrypting a composed message Bugzilla-Product: Evolution Bugzilla-Component: Mailer Description: Description of Problem: It is unnecessarily cumbersome to constantly have to go to the security menu and select "encrypt" when composing messages. Just like there is an option to automatically sign messages, there should be a message to automaticly encrypt messages when the public keys of all recipients are available. Also, there should be a prominent icon on the taskbar to toggle encryption on and off in place of, or in addition to a menu choice. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. 2. 3. Actual Results: Expected Results: How often does this happen? Additional Information: Unknown reporter: dmichaud@amergin.org, changed to bugbuddy-import@ximian.com. Setting qa contact to the default for this product. This bug either had no qa contact or an invalid one.
adding keywords
depends on bug 204029
Probably there could also be a default setting for each contact about this.

I'm removing the "toolbar items" part of the bug summary to make this one report handle one issue.

I think this Bug should be renamed to "add encrypt/sign icon to taskbar" The "always encrypt" option is available in 3.8.5
Is there a changelog reference to that? I can't see it mentioned in the 3.8 series .news files, though there was a few other GPG-related things so maybe it came in on one of those. The Ubuntu gnome3 PPA is at 3.8.2, do you know if that version contains it?
sorry for the confusion. should have read the bug more carefully, it says keys not certificates. the option for "always encrypt outgoing mail" is available for SMIME but missing for OpenPGP in 3.8.5
I note that there's not even a "reply encrypted to encrypted emails" option, which is really a bug as this has the potential to cause serious data leakage where a message is replied to quoting the original, but the user forgets to tick the box. As a result of this the message is sent in the clear. This is very easy mistake to make.

"I note that there's not even a 'reply encrypted to encrypted emails' option" Actually, it just does that by default, there's no way to turn it off. And, as you say, it poses a security risk if turned off, so there's really no need to add an option for it. Just to note, this should not automatically encrypt when sending to a mailing list. This could probably be handled simply by only encrypting when all email addresses can be encrypted to.
Agree totally with Sam.

This is now done, see current 3.18 release.
Edit->Preferences->Mail Accounts-><account>->Edit->Security tab->Always encrypt outgoing messages when using this account, available in both sections (PGP and S/MIME), since bug #748774, part of 3.18.0. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 748774 ***
