GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 216271
add a threading column (like in thunderbird)
Last modified: 2021-05-19 11:09:27 UTC
In dealing with folders with many messages, the default threading behaviour of leaving threads expanded (showing all the read messages) is very onerous. Collapsed threads with the title highlighted if there is even one unread message in the thread would greatly decrease the number of lines to read in maillist traffic. I believe that this should be the default but a config item would be fine. I would also suggest that a threading column be implemented. A visible widget is convenient for switching the view and it is natural to group it with the other sorting options and I think not as natural to be in the view menu. In addition I have added comments and support to 3206 "sort threads by newest unread message". Which I think would also enhance message threading greatly. These features are available in Mozilla Mail/News, and really the only features I miss from Mozilla. ; ) Please accept these suggestions in the spirit they are intended, that of a devoted daily user of Evolution. With Galeon and Evolution, Gnome has two "best of breed" applications in any OS.
1) not seeing unread messages in collapsed threads is the same as bug 257117 (not seeing flags in collapsed threads) 2) what is a "threading column"? :-/
oh, and your first part is a duplicate of bug 260277 which is targetted to 2.3, so also targetting this and closing bug 260277

A "threading column" means that there is a narrow column header meaning "thread". Clicking this means "sort by thread", equivalent to turning threading on and off. (OK, it's not quite equivalent, since it makes it less obvious how to group by thread and sort by subject. I think you can get that by clicking Subject then clicking Thread.) In the attached screenshot it is the leftmost column and is active. Clicking on one of the conversation icons in that column selects the whole thread, which is also quite nice. For me too this is one of very few things I miss from thunderbird. I don't miss it quite so much now there is Ctrl+t to toggle threading but it still would be nice. You don't need to show the column by default.

will not be fixed in the 2.5 timeframe, retargetting to "future".
Bumping version to a stable release.
Hm. 2.28 still doesn't have a Threading column.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new enhancement request ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
