Description zbeckman 2001-08-01 20:58:36 UTC
Package: Evolution
Priority: Normal
Version: 0.11.99
Synopsis: In open message window, pressing "delete" does not load next message
Bugzilla-Product: Evolution
Bugzilla-Component: Mailer

Description:
I don't like using the preview pane; instead, I double-click to open a message. I
would expect that, in the open message window, pressing the "delete" icon would
delete the current message _and_ open the next message. However, it actually
deletes the current message, and then leaves a blank message window open
rather than automatically loading the next message.

Note that this only happens if the "next message" has not already been read. If the
next message _has_ been read and is in the local cache, everything works as
expected.

Comment 1 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-08-01 21:04:01 UTC
this works in CVS so I'm gonna close this as fixed.
Comment 2 zbeckman 2001-08-03 16:17:02 UTC
I just obtained the latest update (0.12.99) and I'm still seeing this
behavior. It basically makes the popup mail window useless, except for
reading one message (you have to close the window and double-click on
another message in order to continue reading).

Perhaps this is only a bug with IMAP. It always occurs for messages
that have not yet been read--which, on an IMAP server, probably also
means a message that has not yet been _downloaded._ HOWEVER, I'm also
seeing it on message that _have_ been downloaded, but not
consistently. I hope that helps narrow down the problem.
Comment 3 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-08-03 16:25:30 UTC
dude, I cannot reproduce this - it works just like you want it to for
me. No one here can reproduce this.
Comment 4 Dan Winship 2001-08-06 17:16:42 UTC
I can reproduce this trivially by following the provided directions.
Comment 5 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-08-07 17:19:23 UTC
show me.

I still can't reproduce it.
Comment 6 Peter Williams 2001-08-07 17:37:20 UTC
Um, I was surprised, but it actually worked for me as well.
Comment 7 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-08-07 17:41:19 UTC
so it turns out that it works for danw as well if he presses the
delete icon, but if he uses the "Delete" key on the keyboard, it
doesn't.

I'll have to wait till I get new mail to try this...
Comment 8 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-08-07 20:54:33 UTC
update:

so, not *only* do you have to be using the Delete keyboard button, but
you also have to have focus in the main window (not the
message-browser window) AND you have to have "Hide Deleted Messages"
toggled.

no wonder I couldn't reproduce it before...I was doing none of these
things.

can you still reproduce this? I'm not able to...
Comment 12 Dan Winship 2001-09-12 20:25:52 UTC
Yes.
Comment 13 zbeckman 2001-09-12 23:37:03 UTC
Yes. In my case, it is 100% consistent (meaning, I have never seen
this work, it always breaks). My options are thus: Turn OFF the
preview pane. Turn ON "hide deleted messages." Open your message by
double-clicking on it. Click the delete icon on the message window
that just opened. ALWAYS, the window goes blank and I have to close it
or press the "next" icon (in which case, it skips a message). So it
seems that the "message pointer" is going to the right place, but the
window is not displaying it.

Comment 16 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-10-16 20:14:41 UTC
okay, so the reason this gets a blank page is because it received the
signal that the message has been deleted (and since you have "Hide
Deleted Messages" toggled, the message gets hidden) but since you
pressed Delete in the MAIN window, it only selects the next message in
the MAIN window, not the MessageBrowser window.

Comment 17 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-10-16 20:19:38 UTC
n/m, the problem is that we need to somehow connect the
MessageBrowser's (hidden) message-list callbacks up to the main
window's message-list signals.
Comment 18 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-10-16 21:50:04 UTC
fixed in CVS but probably broke a hundred other things, oh well...

Has this cropped up again?
Comment 26 Luis Villa 2001-11-02 13:37:51 UTC
Apparently broken again. Trash can button works but delete key does
not. Only 1.0 if you have time on your hands, jeff.
Comment 27 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-11-02 19:04:31 UTC
I don't get it, it works perfectly for me...

do you have your message-list in threaded mode maybe?
Comment 28 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-11-02 19:06:03 UTC
just tried with Threaded List mode on and it worked perfectly for me
yet again...

I have no idea.
Comment 29 Luis Villa 2001-11-02 19:18:59 UTC
Weird. Works for me now too; it didn't when I tried it last night. No
idea what changed. Marking as CLOSED, I guess. Bob, Jorge, can you
still reproduce?
Comment 30 Jorge Salinas 2001-11-02 19:21:50 UTC
yep, it does...with last snapshot 11021558
Comment 31 Jorge Salinas 2001-11-02 19:33:15 UTC
i think i know what happens....
it doesnt display the next message if i have enabled "Hide deleted
messages"...but, ...if you disable Hide deleted messages before open a
message...then open a message, NOW select hide deleted messages, click
over the trash in the message window....it does display the next
message....so , if you have enabled hide deleted message "before" open
a message i t doesnt work...i hope it helps...
Comment 32 Bob Doan 2001-11-02 19:38:32 UTC
I still get a blank window if Hide deleted messages is checked.. I
don't think this is the correct behavior..
Comment 33 Luis Villa 2001-11-02 20:33:18 UTC
Yeah, reopening. 1.0.x correctness.
Comment 34 Not Zed 2001-11-02 22:37:26 UTC
Patch attached should fix.

should fix delete clears, and also 'get mail resets' bugs.
Comment 36 Not Zed 2001-11-02 22:38:21 UTC
Making it 1.0 again, since the fix is trivial afterall.
Comment 37 Not Zed 2001-11-03 00:09:11 UTC
Patc applied.
Comment 38 Jorge Salinas 2001-12-03 19:28:42 UTC
I have to add something...usinf EVO 1.0, this thing doesnt work....if
i open a message (double click) in a new window, then i delete the
message (with "Hide deleted message" eneabled), in the message window
i can still see the message, and it's the only message in the
folder....the only thing that it change, it's that the icons in the
message window taskbar goes blank (disabled)...but the window doesnt
goes blank...what i think it should be correct behavior...
