Description Dmitriy Kropivnitskiy 2005-03-30 17:02:42 UTC
Distribution/Version: Ubuntu (Hoary)

I think a lot of people would find it useful to be able to keep icons on the
desktop sorted in alphabetical order (as in automatically place new icons in
proper alphabetical order) with options to make folders go before files and
devices before folders.
Comment 1 Sebastien Bacher 2005-04-03 12:35:08 UTC
the current behaviour is to have folders before files, isn't it ?
Comment 2 Dmitriy Kropivnitskiy 2005-04-04 00:38:27 UTC
Yes, when you click "Clean up by name" you get folders first if that option is
enabled in nautilus. What I meant was automatic sort that doesn't require you to
resort things every time you add a file to the desktop.
Comment 3 Matthew Lenz 2005-04-08 18:43:59 UTC
it should also support some kind of snap-to-grid functionality for placing icons.
Comment 4 Dmitriy Kropivnitskiy 2005-04-08 18:47:49 UTC
Nautilus already supports snap to grid. Just check "Keep Aligned" in the desktop
context menu.

This feature is asked for in http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14044 as
well.

Comment 10 António Fernandes 2018-01-02 18:50:27 UTC
Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
