GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 324631
Desktop Icon Sorting and Positioning Issues
Last modified: 2012-09-19 23:53:59 UTC
I really wish icon sorting and positioning would work EXACTLY as they do in Nautilus browswer windows. The icons are always sorted the way I ask, and always positioned in nice grids. If I drag icons to or away from a browswer window, positioning and sorting are always maintained. The desktop is a different story. I always find myself having to right click - clean up by name. New icons get placed in weird places. Dragging icons away doesn't snap the remaining ones into a grid. The behavior should be consistent between the desktop and the browser windows. And by consistent, I mean exactly like the browser windows. Other information:
Adding myself to the CC list. I'd like to state my agreement that desktop positioning needs to be rectified.
+1 on this. It's very annoying that the location of desktop icons are not saved between sessions. (Still present in 2.14 btw)
+1 I have the same problem, when I start gnome with a media in cd drive, the drive icon overlaps another icon. Icons not arranged "normally" my gnome version is 2.14.0 on Ubuntu Drake Dapper
All the additional comments aren't really valid. We can fix the issue of misplaced semi-positioned volume icons without introducing a placement grid, though I agree that it might be a good idea. [1] fixes it and was just committed. Milestoning this bug report to future since a correct grid placement on the desktop may be nontrivial if we allow zooming without a major NautilusIconContainer icon positioning rewrite. Please, I'd like to be informed if there is anyone working with this issue. The problem persists in the GNOME Nautilus 2.22.x series. Thanks.
[Bumping version number as per comment 5] Does this still happen in 2.32?
