GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 106239
On giant displays, place windows near the pointer
Last modified: 2020-11-07 12:35:27 UTC
Two items: - when doing placement with Xinerama, should prefer to place on the current Xinerama - if the display is one huge monitor (thousands of pixels), it might be nice to keep windows near the mouse pointer. though the threshold for at what size to do this is going to be a little bit arbitrary.

is there anyone that actually has such super miracle displays? Or should we just close this bug, do you think?
Yeah, this was a real request. There are various organizations that have big maps on the wall and stuff like that.
Created attachment 33584 [details] [review] Patch to add manual placement policy This patch implements manual placement of new windows. It has also been backported to metacity 2.4.55-6 for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3: RPM and SRPM available here http://www.tigress.co.uk/rmy/metacity/index.html
Any patch for this would have to be smart enough to work automatically. No placement preferences in metacity please.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you still use metacity and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
