Description Hendrik van Antwerpen 2008-01-23 15:37:00 UTC
I'd like to see an option that set preferred initial window positions to the same screen as it's parent (often gnome-panel). When I open an application it's always a guess where the window will turn up and sometimes, when I don't use the second monitor, I'd like to put it off, which I now can't because I wouldn't find my windows back.
Not using Xinerama is no option, because I'd like to move my windows around when I do use the second monitor.

AFAIK, currently new windows are placed on the screen where is the cursor, and I don't think it should be changed as it's rather intuitive.

Also, with respect to using metacity with a screen off, I believe the right way is to remove the screen, with xrandr 1.2. It's very easy with the "--auto" argument of xrandr. Here, with an intel card, it works very fine. When all the drivers are move to xrandr 1.2 there shouldn't be any issue.

In principle you're right. The windows are created on the screen where the cursor is and it is intuitive. But some windows, when they are created fullscreen (notably firefox and evince, they save their state and make themself fullscreen when you start them next time), the window moves to my second screen, although my cursor is on the other screen. This is off course undesirable.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all
old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years.

If you still use metacity and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
