Description Elijah Newren 2004-10-15 04:58:59 UTC
This will be a tracker for window placement bugs, though I'm trying to remove
those that are constraint related (those go in bug 155458). I will start this
off in a minute by adding the following dependencies:

85523 provide method for re-placing ("organizing") windows already on desktop
106239 consider placing windows near the pointer (esp. for huge monitors)
112465 metacity override redirect menus appear on wrong screen w/ xinerama
124667 not honoring PPosition on dialogs?
126792 consider placing new windows to avoid the mru ones
138290 come up with good placement policy for UTILITY
145503 lots of windows on one screen causes appearance on other monitor
147384? upon session restore in changed resolution, scale windows
151818 consider placing new windows centered on the screen
153620 Applications appear on current workspace (vs. workspace launched on)

I searched for a while trying to find Rob's description of the current placement
algorithm. Turns out it wasn't on bugzilla. I can easily find this bug in
rationales.txt, so I'm going to add a link to it here, since it's at least
slightly more than tangentially related. :)

Note that bug 304763 and bug 126792 have patches for testing various ideas.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old bug reports in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years.

If you can still reproduce this issue in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
