GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 172128
Autosorting desktop icons
Last modified: 2018-01-02 18:50:27 UTC
Distribution/Version: Ubuntu (Hoary) I think a lot of people would find it useful to be able to keep icons on the desktop sorted in alphabetical order (as in automatically place new icons in proper alphabetical order) with options to make folders go before files and devices before folders.
the current behaviour is to have folders before files, isn't it ?
Yes, when you click "Clean up by name" you get folders first if that option is enabled in nautilus. What I meant was automatic sort that doesn't require you to resort things every time you add a file to the desktop.
it should also support some kind of snap-to-grid functionality for placing icons.
Nautilus already supports snap to grid. Just check "Keep Aligned" in the desktop context menu.
This feature is asked for in http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14044 as well.

Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
