GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 97257
nautilus crash on right-click of file [get_bonobo_window]
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Package: nautilus Severity: critical Version: GNOME2.1.0 2.1.1 Synopsis: nautilus crash on right-click of file [get_bonobo_window] Bugzilla-Product: nautilus Bugzilla-Component: general BugBuddy-GnomeVersion: 2.0 (2.1.1) Description: Description of Problem: This bug appears to be a duplicate of bug 97009. Occasionally, when I double-click the icon for my home directory on the desktop, nautilus does not open a window. If I double-click the icon again, I get two Nautilus windows. In one of the windows, I can perform file operations without any problems. If I try to do anything in the other window, Nautilus crashes. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Run GNOME for a long time. 2. Double-click "foo's Home" and watch nothing happen. 3. Double-click "foo's Home" again. 4. In one of the two windows, right-clicking a file will make Nautilus crash. Actual Results: Nautilus crashes. Expected Results: Only one Nautilus window, and all is well. How often does this happen? Fairly rarely. I had to run my system for a long time before it started doing this, but now it's fairly predictable (happens every few minutes). Additional Information: I have had my system up for quite a while (~12 hours). System is Red Hat 7.3 with Ximian GNOME2 (2.1) snapshots. nautilus2-2.1.1.0.200210242020-0.snap.ximian.1 libbonobo-2.0.1.0.200210242020-0.snap.ximian.1 Debugging Information: Backtrace was generated from '/usr/bin/nautilus' [New Thread 1024 (LWP 24740)] [New Thread 2049 (LWP 24743)] [New Thread 1026 (LWP 24744)] [New Thread 2051 (LWP 24745)] [New Thread 3076 (LWP 24746)] [New Thread 4101 (LWP 24747)] [New Thread 5126 (LWP 24748)] [New Thread 6151 (LWP 24749)] 0x40a784d9 in wait4 () from /lib/libc.so.6

I marked 97009 as a duplicate of this one instead of the other way around because this one had more information. Now that we have two copies of this bug, I'm confirming it.
Heath - Are you still seeing this? It seems like a suspiciously one-time report.
Yeah, I got it a couple days ago, but I didn't submit the bug. The bug only happens after I run GNOME for a long, long time, and even then it's pretty rare.

I submitted Bug 98854 which was marked a dup of this one... I didn't note it in my bug filing, but after reading this report, it's similar to the behavior I experienced... double clicking on my home folder icon opened up no windows then two windows... occasionally, the nautilus window would also revert back to the home directory even when i told it to go somewhere else... Just fyi...
How long did you wait after the first double click failed? Was it less than 2 seconds? Did you ever get a "Cancel Open?" dialog?
This is probably some strange race condition. I need to be able to reproduce it to fix it, but just wildly clicking on the home icon doesn't seem to do it for me. Do you have a fast machine or a slow/overloaded machine?
I'd estimate I waited three to five seconds in most cases before clicking again. I may have gotten a "cancel open" dialog, but I don't recall anymore. It's been quite some time since I've seen this crash, and I now have GNOME 2.1 installed on both my computers. However, I haven't run GNOME for an entire day in some time. I'd offer the cautious opinion that this has been fixed.
I don't think so. None of that code changed. Its just some quite hard to get race condition.
*** Bug 107288 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I've been using 2.2.1 for awhile now and have never seen this bug since the 2.0.x series... I think it probably got fixed somewhere along the way...
Any of the other reporters confirm that this is gone?
