Description Mark Finlay 2002-08-29 18:11:09 UTC
When a file is selected in single click mode with list view activated,
there are two
problems.

1. Doubleclicking on it's filename will allow you to rename it, whereas the
expected behaviour
of doubleclicking a file, whether it is selected or not, is to open the file.

Currently, one has to either select another file before one can double
click on the file to open it, or one can double click on the Size, Type,
etc colum for that file.

I think this problem could fixed by adding a check to see how long is
selected in the mouse
properties for double click, and then waiting that long for a second click
before going into
"rename mode". If a second click is detected during this period the file is
launched and the
rename mode activation is cancelled.

2. When a file is secected, clicking on it's icon at the left hand side
will activate "rename
mode". This behavior is confusing and I think it would be more intuitive if
the icon was only
used to launch the file and not to rename it. This problem would not be so
prominent if not for
the above #1

check out bug 83552. Basically imho clicking shouldn't initiate
renaming period. So i would be tempted to mark this a dupe of that
bug, but since this is your bug, I think it would be appropriate for
you to decide not me.

Well If renaming is going to be nuked altogether (YAY)
then you can mark this as a dupe - but I'd like
to leave this here as a suggestion
for how renaing should work if it has to stay.

Personally I hate that renaming anyway - i'm constantly loosing
filenames in
windows.
