GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 89692
gweather is too much american centric
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Several issues with gweather default configuration: * non-metric system by default (metric system is much more widely used isn't it ?) * pittsburg selected by default (yup, a default must be chosen so that's a little tricky) * the treeview should be sorted alphabetically imo (why would the united states come first, and then canada and then europe ?) This bug may seem a little trollish, but that's really weird to get these default settings when you are using gweather in France. This will be difficult to get a default which everybody will like, so I was wondering if the default values in the schemas were localisable by any chance ?
The second part of this is covered by bug 89310, "prompt for city on instantiation". I was thinking the first part could be based on LANG, 'though that might not be perfect and the behavior isn't obvious to the user. The behavior would be more-clear if the display included the units (F or C), but then again that would take up more space... As for the sorting of the location list, I'd have to agree that having the US first isn't fair. A more-fair way of doing it (and more sensable, IMHO) would be like the timezone selector, having a map to narrow you down by region. You could then have a drop-down menu to select the exact location you want to use.
Looking a little more into that problem, the first two points can be easily done using gconf (gconf default values can be defined on a locale basis). The problem at the moment is that intltool doesn't translate those locale dependent default value (I'll file a bug for that soon).
I have moved the ºC and ºF remark to bug 95436 ("gweather should display temperature scale").
Arguably a bug, not an enhancement.
