GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 83433
Control -center should provide a simple menu editing tool
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
I know we have menu editting in nautilus, but that feature is fairly advance. It would be nice to have a simple menu editing tool, with a very clean easy to use ui, that more basic users could use to edit menus. Note, I am not advocating removal of menu editing (or the associated applications directory) from nautilus. This tool would simply complement the existing nautilus functionality.
Please refer back to bug 83428, which is related to this issue :/
There should be only one menu-editing tool, not multiple ones. Having a redundancy of them is only begging for conflicts, syncing problems, and other such. I'm not saying that nautilus is the right way, just that without a lot of code and design work this isn't a particularly useful bug. Marking enhancement and I'd mark it 'future' if I could.
Louie: Have to disagree with you a little bit. I think a really easy to use menu editing program that uses the same vfolder method that nautilus uses would be nice. There would be no syncing problems since you would be using 2 programs to edit the same directory (sort of like using 2 file managers at once on the same directory), however the menu editor program would not expose you to this. Instead the menu editing program would have a precise purpose and be designed to be very easy to use, with an intended audience of novice, and medium level users. The applications directory in nautilus is well just another vfs vfolder directory that nautilus can view and do file operations on, hence it is a nice way for advance users to edit menus or just use it for launching apps etc. This is similar to how windows does menu editing. It provides a simple (well it windows so thats relative) interface for users to do menu editing, but users can also use explorer to edit the menus. Note if this program was made, I'd want it to be the default app for editing menus while using nautilus would be sort of an easter egg for advance users. This definately needs more thought though...

Should this bug depend on the one in the first comment, or the other way around?

I agree with luis here. HAving two apps to edit the same thing seems inappropriate. Either one of them is too or the other is doing too little. We're ahving enough trouble getting one of the damn things written. Let's not say that we really need two.
