Over in bug 710424, we're working on improvements for the existing ability to over-amplify volume - that is, to turn up the volume over 100%. This is primarily intended for certain hardware that doesn't go very loud.

One of the drawbacks of over-amplification is that it is likely to cause sound distortion. I'd therefore like to provide status information when it's active, with an icon in the top bar.
