GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 783933
PSD files not importing properly within GIMP
Last modified: 2017-06-18 21:35:35 UTC
GIMP 2.8.22 OSX 10.12.6 (Sierra) Issue: Received several files via email from someone. They are in PhotoShop native file format (PSD). Within the Gmail interview the previews show the images as they are designed. However, after importing into GIMP, one of the layers changes color from white to black, and two additional layers seem to not be displaying at all. When viewing the psd file through the Preview application, they display as expected. Duplicated the issue on my Windows 10 laptop, so it does not appear to be O/S specific. Thanks for your help! Robert
Created attachment 354000 [details] native psd file viewed through Preview app Screen shot of graphic as seen through Preview app.
Created attachment 354001 [details] screenshot of image after importing into GIMP Screenshot of image as it appears in my copy of GIMP 2.8.22.
The native PSD file is too large to attach within Bugzilla, so I have uplaoded it to my Google Drive, and posted a link below: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6RK0YWrP27qakNGclBDY0JzN2s/view?usp=drive_web
Created attachment 354008 [details] Test with the passthrough branch of GIMP As I suspected, this is because GIMP doesn't yet support the pass-through mode for layer groups. We have a branch with that feature (see the screenshot) that we shall probably merge after releasing 2.9.6, so it will end up in 2.9.8/2.10. Sadly, until that happy moment, there's no way you can use the feature unless you build GIMP from source code. Also, it makes this bug a duplicate of #604715, so I'll close it if you don't mind. I emailed you the temporary solution for this particular file. We hope to resolve this mess sooner rather than later :)

Thanks for the quick work Alexandre! I saw the solution for the email you sent me. While that resolved the palm frond issue, it did not resolve the oak leaf in the lower right-hand corner importing as black, rather than white. Easy to take care of by using COLORS/INVERT. But, figure I should mention it. This is the first time I've ever had an issue so perhaps the church either has a new artist, or updated their copy of PS. I'll look into building from source. Not the first time I've had to do that. :-)
