Could you be more specific about how you got to this point?

i.e. "Right click on desktop, change desktop background, in Background
preferences dialog" - is that where you were when this happened? Did
you then click on the  "Picture" button to get a dialogue listing
possible images to use as background? Or did you follow some other
sequence of steps? To be most helpful, a bug report has to list a
reproducible series of steps getting to the point were the problem
occurred, so you don't leave us guessing.

If I follow the series of steps that are my best guess about how you
got this, I can't reproduce it, but I'm not sure I'm following the
right sequence of steps.

I installed garnome, and the default settings have that path specified
instead of following where it was installed. Thus every possible way
that opens gnome2-background-properties will complain.
