Description Christian Stadelmann 2016-08-27 13:35:34 UTC
Steps to reproduce:
1. install gnome-photos from flatpak nightly repo [1]
2. run it
3. switch to albums view

What happens:
I have about 100 folders inside XDG_PICTURES_DIR. Most of them contain nothing but jpeg images, mostly photos.
One folder inside XDG_PICTURES_DIR named "Screenshots-tmp" contains only screenshots (PNG file format) and is showing up in "Albums" view as "Screenshots". All other folders aren't showing up.

As first-time user of gnome-photos I don't understand
a) why are my pictures not showing up in albums view even though I have created many albums before using gnome-photos?
b) how can I add albums?
c) why is the only album displayed being renamed?

What should happen:
A) all albums should be displayed
B) in albums view there should be a button to add a new album

Affected version:
app/org.gnome.Photos/x86_64/master 54d0550e5cdf

Additional info:
Bug #756133 is probably related.

Hi, thanks to reporting this.

GNOME Photos aims to abstract the concept of file system fetching automatically all your photos in XDG_PICTURES_DIR and organize them without modify the file system structure.

The album "Screenshots" you see is generated automatically looking at the metadata of the pictures, even if you don't have the "Screenshots-tmp" folder, the "Screnshots" album would be created anyway.

The current way to create albums is to select pictures in the Photos view and click the "Add to album" button in the selection toolbar. As you pointed out, there are some problems on the "create an album" flow and it should be fixed by implementing the mockup in Bug #756133. Sadly, we are far from implement it because it requires first a new view mode with headers.

There were some thoughts about suggest the creation of new albums based on the folder structure to improve the transition to GNOME Photos when the user already has all the photos well organized in the file system. But we don't have discuss it deeply.

Due to the limited resources, we are trying to choose some high priority tasks to solve. At this time "Import from device" (Bug #751212) and "Photos view - show date headings" (Bug #740415) have higher priority.
