Thanks for taking the time to report this.

The keyboard shortcut for "Go to Parent"/"Go Up", is [Alt]+[Arrow Up]. And it works in Windows too. It's practically a standard, and akin to the other navigation shortcuts:
[Alt]+[Arrow Left] for "Go Back"
[Alt]+[Arrow Right] for "Go Forward"

On the other hand, [Backspace] is already in use, clearing the search query and exiting search. Although implement shortcuts people are used to from other platforms is generally a good idea, [Backspace] as "Go to Parent" is probably one of the cases where we shouldn't blindly copy what Windows does.

This particular issue has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find.

Backspace for up is pretty much as universal, I have yet to run across a file explorer that doesn't support this outside of nautilus which had it working fine in previous versions. If you don't like it great but at least give us the option to turn it back on.

Universal? Can you provide a list of file managers and the reason they used backspace instead of a different shortcut (if you happen to know the reason)?

But most likely we are not going to put it, since it's near the Delete key and it's used for others actions.

Backspace as -up- by default
* Windows Explorer
* Nemo
* Krusader
* konqueror
* PCmanFM/PCmanFM-qt
* XFE

In addition the following provide backspace bound to -back- by default
* Thunar
* Dolphin

And in all but the windows case these bindings are customizable

As for the reason why? Because that's what people use and changing it breaks their flow. It would be nice if the Gnome project would start listening to what their users want instead of continually removing features that people use for the sake of simplicity.

You don't agree with backspace, that's fine, at least give me the option to enable it for myself.

Not for the people using GNOME, elementary, or OSx as I can see, so they could say the same in their platforms... I'm asking the real reason why it was decided as a shortcut, not just because one did it.
