When I open the side panel the default is the thumbnails but I want index as default.

## Steps To Reproduce

1. Open a PDF file with evince
2. Open the side panel (you can press F9 for it).

## Actual Results

The side panel show thumbnails.

## Expected Results

The side panel show index.

Evince can get thumbnails from all type of documents it supports.  But only a very limited number of documents have index, and IIRC, those are limited to a subset of PDF.

It might be possible to get the index first, and fallback to thumbnails.  But the behaviour would be inconsistent among documents, and possibly confusing.

On the other hand, once you set the index for a document, next time you open the document, it should show the window as you left it.

This has been discussed before.  It used to be 'Index' by default, then it changed to 'Thumbnails' by default, but remembering the settings per document (as I stated in the last sentence of my previous comment).
