GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 748931
No way to access current folder context menu in a full list view
Last modified: 2016-11-05 17:51:48 UTC
I can see this usability issue has been reported quite a few times in the past for previous versions but it looks like it's been reintroduced in 3.16. There's no way to access the current folder's context menu in a full list view. This means pasting and accessing the New Document menu in the current folder is impossible without using keyboard shortcuts, temporarily changing the view to icon view or resizing Nautilus to create the necessary free space. I used to be able to get around the pasting limitation in 3.14 (I think) by accessing the context menu by right-clicking the breadcrumb in the path bar, but now that has been inexplicably removed too.
Yes, it's a known issue, and we need a solution for it. Not sure I understood that we removed it "inexplicably", you mean that could be an accident? In that case no.

One possible solution is to place the remaining context menu in the upper-right status-bar menu https://bug749837.bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=303927
Placing the items in the toolbar doesn't look very good, since you are changing where they are placed depending on the view, and also make the menus crowed, which is what we tried to avoid with the new design. I feel bad we didn't came with something for this issue, moving to 3.20 and I hope we find a solution for it by then.
Hello, This is a really annoying issue, as Pasting isn't possible without keyboard at all, and that's something that happens quite often. Here is the right-click menu we get when clicking on an icon: Open ---- Open in New Tab Open in New Window ---- Open with other application ---- Cut Copy ---- Move to... Copy to... ---- Move to Wastebasket ---- Rename ---- Compress Send To... Open in Terminal --- Properties Here is the current folder menu when right-clicking in empty space: New Folder New Document > --- Paste --- Select All --- Properties --- Open in Terminal So, couldn't we have it Merged into the usual menu when in list-view only? It would only add a few items, and only people using the list-view would have this bigger menu in the end. But seriously, New Folder/Document, Paste and Select All are not accessible at all, and that is a big issue everyday. Properties of the current folder can be accessed by going up 1 folder, and same for Open in Terminal, so those last 2 are not that useful IMO. Are there any people from UI that would think it's an acceptable solution?
This issue impacts directory-related extensions such as nautilus-open-terminal: Bug 750276
Maybe a simple stop-gap solution is to add a shortcut for it? It is already kind of easy to work around once one knows the ctrl+2 shortcut but this would make it even easier.
