GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 747924
Mouse pointer disappears and cursor stops blinking
Last modified: 2016-01-13 10:31:38 UTC
Open gedit. Notice the cursor is blinking. Type a few lines of text. Highilight some of the text. Press <CTRL><c> to cut the text. Notice that the mouse ponter is invisible while hovering over the gedit window. Notice that the gedit cursor is no longer blinking. ***Workaround*** sudo apt-get install ibus-gtk $ uname -a Linux Lenovo-M3070 3.16.0-34-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 23 17:21:27 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 14.10 Release: 14.10 Codename: utopic Bug has been submitted through Ubuntu channels, dating back as far as October 2014, and users switch text-editor out of frustration from this bug, all though a bugfix seems to be found, doing the install of ibus-gtk (not ibus-gtk3).
I think it's a downstream/packaging bug in Ubuntu. I don't have this bug neither on Fedora nor with Jhbuild. As you said there is a missing package. Also, Ubuntu has the tendency to mix gnome versions between modules. This is also a source of bugs. gedit 3.10 is meant to be used with gtk+ 3.10, gedit 3.16 with gtk+ 3.16, etc.
Or it's maybe the same bug as bug #658458.
Can you try with a more recent version of gedit? 3.18 or 3.16, currently.
