Description Jo 2014-11-06 13:04:00 UTC
Any error dialog should be displayed in the status bar and if said bar isn't visible, show the status bar for some seconds just to throw the error.
Btw, maybe useful for the measure tool dialog too ?

That could be an in testing concept. Problem is, people don't even notice the status bar when it is there all the time, so I'm not sure if this would be beneficial in general.

Presumably you must have the error console open somewhere to need error messages displayed in the status bar, so I suggest leaving it where you can see it.

I see big error-dialogs a bit obsolete…and too intrusive. It is much more decent, to show error logs as informations but marginally, also because we end-users have only a limited use and handling of bugs and console-error messages.
To see a history of the error logs in Gimp, we can use the given dock dialog "Error console"- in German its "Fehlerausgabe" to see if we need to write something down useful for a bug report.

Sorry, Michael, but that sounds -without offense- a bit funny. ;)
A status bar should display status informations, if the user sees the output in there or not - why should be a status bar, if this element is of no use.

Sometimes we click on a locked layer and Gimp throws an error dialog, like expected.

But often im annoyed by this messages and proceed painting, without to close that window with ok. What improves if i push ok on that error dialog? nothing.

the result is that this error dialog rests open all the time behind Gimps window environment (im always in fullscreen mode) till im not done and send Gimp in my Os Dock.

Clicking ok on the error messages sends Gimp again out of my Os dock, in the meaning i need again Gimp

Now, thats what happens. Id like to have error messages displayed with a little timeout (10 seconds or so) in the toolbar menu, dismissing automatically. In case the toolbar wouldnt be visible we could instruct gimp to show the toolbar for 10 seconds or so to show the error.

Have you tried Windows -> Dockable -> Error Console?

When it's open, it displays all error messages, so they are out of the
way. It also allows to conveniently copy/paste the messages e.g. for
bug reports.

yes, its a solution i already used, the problem is, that my dock is already filled with all the dialogs i need, so space for other dialogs is rather meager. Moreover, i use small icons as theme. I modified alot my Gimp interface, to get everything working as i like.

you need not to jump in right now to introduce that improvement.

I agree that the warning, error and even informational messages could definitely be improved. I actually experienced a bit on this topic a year ago (it's somewhere in a stash or a locale branch, I think).

On the other hand, it is true that the current status bar is not extremely noticeable. Yet this is also good sometimes, in particular for common informative messages, like alternate usage of tools (like clicking Ctrl or Shift…), where you don't want necessarily these to be too present. But warning and errors, you want people to see them, yet without being too disruptive.

I think color might be a solution here. If an error message would show up with a bright red color in a status bar, you would not miss it, but in the same time, there is no annoying popup, on which you have to click.
It should not necessarily be in the status bar. This could be another bar appearing and disappearing in the dock or over the canvas, for instance (similar to Firefox errors appearing at the top of a web page to give a warning, or that something is happening in general).
