Description Chris Fahlman 2014-08-14 06:51:40 UTC
Some images do not have their names (titles) displayed in gnome photos. In addition, when opening such an image's properties in gnome photos, the title field is blank.
Comment 1 Pranav Kant 2014-08-15 09:30:11 UTC
I think this is intentionally left blank by default for photos.

I think the idea is that most of the local photos in home directory are either downloaded from internet with weird names likes 124124123f_sdf323234.jpg or DSC4122.jpg. Setting the title field blank allows the user to give custom names to these photos for easier organization of photos.

You can set the title of the photo in the properties dialog.

Some points:

My photos in the home directory are not downloaded from the internet, but from my camera. I assume a fair proportion of users would keep their digital photos in the Pictures directory in the their home directory.

Some of my photos have numerical names. Some don't, as I have renamed them with discriptive names: but gnome-photos still won't display those files' names either. Since they identify the photo uniquely, names are very useful for distinguishing between very similar photos (multiple shots of the same subject for example), even if they are numerical.

Even if the names are odd, they are named as they are named. An application ought to just respect that, as a default.

The user can give custom names within gnome photos anyway, so there is no reason for gnome photos to not show the actual file's name.

This is related to bug 733214 and bug 688562

Maybe we can show the filename as a placeholder for an empty title in properties?
Comment 4 Debarshi Ray 2014-12-16 14:01:48 UTC
I think having a fallback name in the preview headerbar is enough for the moment.
