Description Daniel B 2014-06-14 19:27:04 UTC
At the end of Gnome 2, right before Gnome 3 hit the streets, a Gnome Desktop Machine actually started to become easy to use for regular people. After Gnome 3 (Which I do love b.t.w), Gnome is once again back to being a desktop for technical people like myself, meaning you cannot go without a terminal.

Many tools was removed from the configurations (Gnome Settings), and those that did not, got more limited. But this is about Nautilus, so let's stick with this for now.

Nautilus is the largest File Manager for the free desktop systems. It can do anything, connect to anything, hell even play videos and possibly even make coffee (Not tested). But why is it that it cannot do a simple task of creating a new empty file? Sure, if you place a template file in the template folder, you can get a DUPLICATE new file entry. Not optimal, not pretty and not very user friendly.

And how about launching things as root? Whenever I have to install VMWare, which is a binary packaged with a custom graphical installer, I have to open a terminal. How am I to tell this to the people I help and still convince them that Linux is just as easy as Windows (Which does have a 'Run as Administrator' b.t.w)?

You can go to a terminal if "GNOME Terminal" is installed.
It can be started like any other application, see https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/shell-apps-open.html

> Many tools was removed from the configurations (Gnome Settings)

"GNOME Tweak Tool" offers advanced configuration options for technical people that regular people likely don't want to fiddle with.

> But why is it that it cannot do a simple task of creating a new empty file?

See bug 683735.

> And how about launching things as root?

Requires fixing bug 490200.

Sorry, I completely misread that part in my last comment.
Please ignore the first section, however I don't consider such high level generalizations without any specific examples something for a bug report which should have a clear focus on one specific problem.

First of all, what I meant was executing things like graphical installer without terminal usage. You don't need a terminal in like say Windows to execute an .exe file, if that file needs to be run as Administrator. You just right click on it and click "Run as Administrator".

Second, that bug dates back to 2007. If that has not been fixed/added yet, it's not likely to happen any time soon. We might not even have regular PC's at such time.

That would be possible when bug 490200 gets fixed, so I don't know why this ticket got reopened.
