Description ELR 2014-05-26 14:03:25 UTC
I experience 3-5 second pauses when clicking on all categary fields in a budget, especially budget amounts fields. It seems to be unique to just budgets. This seemed to be new since I installed 2.6.3.
Comment 1 Geert Janssens 2015-02-10 21:59:20 UTC
Thank you for your report. 3-5 second pauses are obviously pretty annoying if you have to move around a lot.

Can you test this with version 3.6.5 ? I have read reports that this version fixes a number of performance issues on Windows.
Comment 2 John Ralls 2015-02-10 22:31:59 UTC
Make that GnuCash 2.6.5.
Comment 3 Geert Janssens 2015-02-11 14:31:05 UTC
Erh yes, 2.6.5...
Comment 4 HRamthun 2015-02-27 12:36:32 UTC
I can confirm the problem is still in 2.6.5 with Windows 7.
Comment 5 Patrick Ruckstuhl 2017-01-01 10:52:34 UTC
Can confirm still exists in 2.6.15 on Windows 10
Comment 6 Paul K 2017-01-09 16:15:56 UTC
I confirm lag exists in 2.6.14 (git rev 3e7022b on 2016-09-17) on Windows 10.
On a Core i7 / 16Mb RAM machine, lag is between 2 and 3 seconds.

Lag is present when :
- clicking on category fields
- clicking on a budget cell to edit
- switching from any opened tab to the budget tab
Comment 7 Robert Chapin 2017-07-30 15:26:13 UTC
Additional severe symptom in 2.6.15:

The Account Name column is impossible to resize. As a result, if the budget is EVER in view when the window is maximized, the budget becomes permanently unusable.
Comment 8 Robert Chapin 2017-07-30 17:29:48 UTC
Upgrade to 2.6.17 did not help.

Found a workaround for resizing the Account Name column. Look for a file named C:\Users\<username>\.gnucash\books\mydata.gnucash.gcm and search for the "[Budget" heading within that file. Under each heading found, reset the value of name_width to some reasonable integer like 400.
Comment 9 Lynx 2017-08-05 01:53:17 UTC
Upgraded to version 2.6.17, on a windows 10 home laptop. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4500 CPU @ 1.80 GHz 2.40 GHz, 8 GB ram, 64 bit operating system.

The budget feature of the program did not work in previous version and still doesn't in this one. It's extremely laggy, causing the program to freeze any time I attempt to do anything. Just opening the budget feature causes the program to freeze for several minutes. Attempting to add accounts to the budget, so it can actually be used as a budget, is impossible: it freezes for several minutes just attempting to open the list of expense accounts, and then it doesn't do open it. Attempting to open the list again results in it freezing again, for several minutes, and still doesn't do anything. Doing anything in the budgeting feature causes freezing for several minutes.

I can and have just printed monthly expense reports to get an idea how money is being spent, and budget that way. However as this is a budgeting program, it would be nice if the budgeting feature actually worked.

It sounds like this has been a problem since GNUcash was created. Maybe a complete revamp of the budgeting feature is needed?
Comment 10 Robert Chapin 2017-10-25 11:03:04 UTC
Same problem in 2.6.18. Budget navigation is painstakingly slow.
Comment 11 2a5f30aa 2017-10-28 13:15:51 UTC
I too experience this in 2.6.18 (and have for a long time in previous versions). Almost any click/action in the Budget tab freezes the UI for 3-5 seconds. Using Windows 10 Home.

I have not experienced this problem when using GnuCash on Linux.
Comment 12 Simon-RD 2017-11-01 09:25:08 UTC
Confirm Issue also exists in 2.6.18
(git rev 3a9fbb8+ on 2017-10-08)

Issue:
Budget Page is unusable due to extensive lag/pausing/delayed-responsiveness.
During the issue, entire Program may also hang for long extended periods forcing termination of the process, and restarting the program.

Experienced on:
Win 7 Ult x64
Core i7 Q720 1.6
8gb RAM

Severe Lag of 5+ Seconds is present when :
- Any user interaction occurs within a budget page, examples include mouse Icon changes, toolbar button focus changes, menu drop down's, scrollbars. (Mouse cursor Position is not affected)

Notes when issue is occuring:
- CPU appears nearly dormant, does not peak above 20% in spikes
- Ram never more than 30% full with other PC applications open (Outlook + Chrome).
- Lag is only present on Budget page, once closed or the focus moved to other page, the lag disappears.
- On first Installation same symptom issue existed with report being created and or run for the first time, no longer the case.

Attempted failed workarounds:
- Deleting and recreating budget makes no difference.
- Closing all other possible PC applications makes no difference.
- Creating alternate budget makes no difference.

GnuCash 2.6.19 budget feature confirmed equally awful.

Was not able to fit a linux machine on my Christmas wishlist this year. :( For the love of Pete, please fix this!
Comment 19 Robert Chapin 2018-04-18 21:36:08 UTC
This is fixed for me in GnuCash 3.0.
