GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 730517
Nautilus doesn't save items view
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:31:49 UTC
Nautilus does not save the way you view the folder contents (shown as a grid of icons/show in a list).

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Can you describe this in more detail? What is the expected behaviour and what is the actual behaviour? You can give examples or step-by-step instructions if relevant.
I can confirm this bug. Steps: Open Nautilus Go to any folder Change the view settings from Grid to List Close Nautilus Open Nautilus Go to that same folder Grid settings are restored and list settings are not remembered This didn't used to be the case in Ubuntu 13.10.
It seems like Nautilus only cares about the default view setting now. I set the default to ”List”, but I want a certain folder to view ”Icons”, but this doesn't work as expected, I think this is related to the above: Open Nautilus Go to that ”certain folder” Change to Icon view Go back to the previous folder – That folder is also in ”Icon view” now! Close Nautilus Open Nautilus – Everything is now back to my default setting, in this case ”List view”. So: 1. Nautilus doesn't save your view settings per folder at all (or, if it does, it never use them). As soon as you close Nautilus, everything is forgotten except your default view setting. 2. While working with Nautilus, all view settings affects all folders, not just the one you set. Ubuntu 14.04. Worked fine in Ubuntu 12.04.
Same with zoom level... I'd like to have my Pictures folder in list view, but the individual picture folders themselves in icon view with a different zoom level. Used to work in Nautilus 3.4... :( Oh, and can I have the moon too? ;)
I just wonder if this is related to the fact that if I change the size and/or location of an icon on my desktop, next time Ubuntu is started all of that is forgotten and my icons are all lined up to the left and all of them are in default size.

I notice that the status is set to ”NEEDINFO”. I can't see what info is needed, though. Maybe I'm just blind or somethng.
Yeah, I do not understand .. António, in what other information do you need?
(In reply to comment #7) > better to see once: > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdrsO5Kwtlg&feature=youtu.be Thanks for the video. I was not sure from commment 0, but from the video I am able to confirm my understanding of the report. In truth, nautilus view options are saved, but they are saved *per window*, not *per folder*. In the past, nautilus used to save them per folder, but this changed when the toolbar got two buttons for changing view mode quickly [bug 682017]. (Both ways have pros and cons, and various file browsers use one or the other design option. I'm not going to argue for either way here; it's not even my decision to make.) So, with relation to this report, nautilus is working as expected. Should we resolve this as "NOTABUG"? (In reply to comment #8) > I notice that the status is set to ”NEEDINFO”. I can't see what info is needed, > though. NEEDINFO status was set at the time of comment 2, two months ago, when I asked Tamir for a more detailed explanation to confim my interpretation of the report. Tamir provided that clarification in comment 7, two days ago, but did not change the status, and it hasn't been reviewed yet. (In reply to comment #9) > Yeah, I do not understand .. António, in what other information do you need? I did not ask for more information, did I? :) I've not had the time to read the last 5 comments until now.
Maybe this isn't the right place to ask, but what's the point in being able to change the size of an icon on the desktop if the setting is not saved? Why not also remove the ”change icon size” option from the right click menu, since it's useless anyway?
(In reply to comment #11) My system doesn't have icons on desktop, so I have not experienced what you mention, but it looks like a bug. You can file a bug report about that. (Unfortunately the "icons on desktop" mode doesn't get much testing nowadays because it is off by default; some things remain silently broken for sometime until someone files a bug report about them.)
António, thanks for the honest answer in the Comment 10. Maybe in this case, create a user survey or wishlist type https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfwm4/+bug/1294600, to see which option will choose people? As a highlight in the news and announce the results?
Hi António! Thanks for your comment, but I don't understand the advantage of saving the view per window? Will a window not be closed earlier or later? Any progress on this subject? The saving of the folder/items view is essential to me, so I hope there will be some action soon, otherwise I will need to use another file manager what would be sad after many years of nautilus usage. Thanks in advance!
Any progress on this subject? This would be great!
Alexandre, thanks for working on this. Hopefully there will be some progress on this. We are eagerly waiting as you can imagine ;-).
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
