There is no way to change the properties of the mneu panel. (eg. background
color, size, enabling autohide, etc.)

More than enhancement; I'd think this is a major usability bug, right?
Or probably more like 'another reason to ditch the menu panel
altogether' I guess...

This was always the case, because it was thought that you should have
a panel that is very difficult to remove and it looks the same for all
setups...There is some talk that the menu panel will be EOL'd for a
normal edge panel, clock and menu applet. This isn't GNOME 2.0 stuff
though I suspect.
