GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 72783
The Window List in the menu panel should be an applet
Last modified: 2015-03-24 13:00:35 UTC
Window list applet should be configurable to act like the window list applet in the menu panel. This should be done, so that by gnome 2.2, the menu panel can be removed a replaced with a standard panel, with the menubar, clock and window list applets.
Yes, but it would probably be a seperate applet
however you decide to do it is fine with me
Hey mark now that i think of it, i'm not really convinced that this type of applet is something that the panel needs to provide. I filed this bug mainly as a feature to feature comparison between the menupanel and an edge panel +menubar applet. I would guess that for generally usability the tasklist on the bottom of the screen is preferable (its definately more featureful). Anyway your call just thought i'd bring this up.
Sure - that may be the case. I know that some people do use this though and I don't know i we want to remove many features in 2.2 ..

Provide 2 applets then. One would be the old "Window List" and the new one "Windows Menu". Btw, the tasklist is nice if you only have a few windows. If you have more than 10 windows then a menu is a lot better.
I think my main gripe with the menu thing (as I said in some other bug report) is that it seems to have been an attempt to copy the Macintosh Finder menu, but without copying the bits that actually made the Finder menu quite useful :) E.g. its ability to show notification of minimized apps that have posted message boxes etc.

This has been done on HEAD. I've called it the "Window Menu". New bugs should be filed suggesting improvements to the applet rather than re-opening this one ..
