GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 726740
[PATCH] Add option to toggle Drag&Drop target in toolbox (Wilber symbol)
Last modified: 2015-02-17 14:49:03 UTC
Created attachment 272432 [details] [review] Patch to add toggle option for DnD area in the toolbox, German translation In the past users had trouble with the Wilber symbol (=drag and drop area) in the toolbox. The Wilber icon eats vertical screen space and can cause the toolbox to be cut off at the bottom. While we rejected requests to remove it by default (see bug #686469) we are open to have an option to toggle it off or on with respect to the user's needs (see also https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-developer-list/2012-May/msg00125.html). I've attached a patch that adds an option to Preferences/Toolbox and the German translation for the new UI string. I'd be grateful for your comments.
Created attachment 272563 [details] [review] Patch to improve and translate tooltip This second patch tells the user about the drag and drop capability, makes the UI string for the option translatable and translates it to German.
Do we want to do this, or not? Because I have not tested, but this looks like a pretty straightforward patch. We could get over with this report by deciding whether we accept it or no. Mitch?
People are asking for it, but I'm wondering why we as developers would implement an option to disable our logo in our program...
If I am to give my opinion, this is not a good idea either, in particular because I think our current preferences are a little messy. And this kind of option is really not really "useful" in my opinion. This will just add one more option in the preferences dialog, making it a little more messy for no good reason. On the other hand, if the logo were to be customizable or removable by a theme (is it possible right now?), then why not. I just don't think this feature deserves a prominent place in the preferences. So I'm all for rejecting the proposition, if that's how other devs feel.
Dunno how other devs feel, but I feel like whatever product management would feel if asked to remove the company logo ;) "What are you asking there???"
Then let's just reject the request, and get over with it? :-)
+1 for rejecting this, for the motives exposed above. If the problem is lack of vertical space on the toolbox, that should be addressed properly in other issues. Remembering the O.P., that the Toolbox icons can already be customized, and one would hardly actually use all the tools that have icons there by default - that just shows that the configuration options are complicated enough as they are.
