Description Allan Day 2014-03-03 22:25:41 UTC
When there aren't any photos, some information is shown in the middle of the window. Right now there are a bunch of layout issues with this:

 * The icon is vertically misaligned with the heading.
 * Too much space between the heading and the body text.
 * The text wraps prematurely, so that "settings" is on a line of its own.

Steps to rectify:

 * Top align the icon with the heading.
 * Reduce the padding between the heading and the body text.
 * Make the space available to the body text wider.

Mockup: https://raw.github.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/master/photos/photos-empty-1.png

(I'm using a button here rather than a link, because it seems a bit more natural to me, but you can treat that as optional.)

By the way, have you seen the corresponding UI in the Background panel?

I like the secondary text in your mockup.

Another problem with the current text is that it does not work when you have added an online account, but the content from it has not yet been mined. In that case, we only show the heading. I think the text in the mockup is better in this aspect, and we would not need to hide it.

Have you looked at the layout in the Favorites view? We do not show any secondary text there. Should we?

Adding Cosimo because this affects gnome-documents too.

The one issue is that "your computer" is a bit generic. Maybe referring to the actual folder (like in your background panel example) would be better.

That sounds better indeed.

Yeah, I think secondary text would be better there - just to clarify what's going on and make it more visually balanced. Maybe something like:

"Select and star images to make them appear here."

s/images/photos/ ?

What do you think about the secondary text for no albums? Now that I think bug 725589 is fixed, people will actually see it.

Like I mentioned in bug #731904 last year, there are (a lot of) scenarios where a user does not see any pictures at all. In those cases the new design of the empty albums screen doesn't help at all.

Because there is no information in the help pages either, this bug deserves another title, like '"No photos found" design, usability and layout issues.

Regards,
Ronald

A good summary of those scenarios are described in the wiki and was given earlier in bug #705708.
