GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 724769
tabs do not help the user visually to know that more number of tabs are open
Last modified: 2018-04-15 00:22:52 UTC
Created attachment 269759 [details] gedit with 8 tabs, only the current active tab visible If we see, gedit attachment#1 [details], which has 8 tabs open but we only see the current tab taking full tab space on the tab-bar. We need firefox's (attachment#4 [details])like "Partial" tabs to show that other tabs are there. The tabs are Justified in the tab/tool-bar; And this causes confusion in any application which has more number of tabs than the screen estate. As can be seen in epiphany attachment#2 [details] window and nautilus window attachment#3 [details] that it is impossible to visually identify the number of tabs open, and "<" button on the tabbar (being a big button) looks like back button which adds to the confusion. Please consider firefox like 'half' or some percentage visible tab, say 5-10% tab based on the position of the current tab; if on the left most tab, then show partial overflowing right tab if on the right most tab, show partial overflowing left tab if in the middle tab, show partial left and right tabs (attachment#4 [details]) Thanks.
Created attachment 269760 [details] epiphany with 8-10 tabs open, but the justified alignment makes it impossible to visually know that there are many tabs open.
Created attachment 269761 [details] nautilus, tabs are not showing text at all making them useless to work with
Created attachment 269762 [details] firefox tabs, which show name and partial tabs both on left and right side on the tabs bar, also the "<" and ">" are smaller on tabbar
Created attachment 269764 [details] opera do not use < and >, but try to condense tabs in the available space
Created attachment 269765 [details] tab menu extension for google-chrome, a list when the tab menu button is clicked google chrome also squeezes the tabs in the available toolbar space. or we can have a tab menu button on the toolbar: http://www.technorms.com/822/get-better-tab-management-in-google-chrome-with-tab-menu having a menu or a vertical tabs, which shows the tabs name and easier switchability is a great feature we need. Thanks.
Created attachment 269766 [details] firefox has "List all tabs" button on the tab bar which is very useful

This is a long-standing problem in the GtkNotebook widget. See bug 326953 and bug 330676.
We're moving to gitlab! As part of this move, we are moving bugs to NEEDINFO if they haven't seen activity in more than a year. If this issue is still important to you and still relevant with GTK+ 3.22 or master, please reopen it and we will migrate it to gitlab.
As announced a while ago, we are migrating to gitlab, and bugs that haven't seen activity in the last year or so will be not be migrated, but closed out in bugzilla. If this bug is still relevant to you, you can open a new issue describing the symptoms and how to reproduce it with gtk 3.22.x or master in gitlab: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/new
