GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 724048
More options.. button's tool tip missing
Last modified: 2014-07-14 20:40:30 UTC
More options.. button that looks like a gear on the right hand side in the toolbar is missing its tool tip in gedit 3.12 UI. Thanks!!
Created attachment 268693 [details] [review] Add tooltip to gears icon
This would be helpful for writing the help and also all the other buttons have tooltips so it would be more consistent.
This is something that needs to be decided for the whole gnome since the gear button is a pattern we use in a lot of applications. At the moment as far as I can see other gnome apps do not have a tooltip Chrome has "Customize and control Google Chrome" I do not have a strong opinion on this: I agree it would be consistent and useful to have a tooltip, on the other hand, "more options" is not really that helpful... CC'ing Allan, since this is a HIG matter
Some of the applications do have tooltips already (see nautilus for an example). The button has different meanings in different applications, so I don't think it's possible to standardise on one text.
please take decision on tooltip asap. It is hindering the help update process for gedit 3.12 Thanks!!
sorry *asap -> as soon as possible :)
Allan suggested to not set any tooltip
(In reply to comment #7) > Allan suggested to not set any tooltip What is the reasoning in this case? Given the usage of that icon in other GNOME applications, it is not clear exactly what the menu contains, nor what will happen when it is clicked (the button is also used to pop up dialogs in some instances).
I am closing this in an effort to clean up the bug list a bit. As said before I have no strong opinion here, so I am open to apply a path if you manage to change the opinion of the design team
