GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 710764
Windows Live/Microsoft Account lacks icon
Last modified: 2015-03-26 19:44:51 UTC
While bug #707684 is about the string, Jasper mentioned the other day that the service also lacks an icon, making the whole thing look slightly broken in GNOME Initial Setup. I'm going to provide an icon here.

For the sake of leaving a paper trail, I removed the butterfly icon for Windows Live some time ago after talking to Jakub because we concluded that there is no single visual identity for this: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-online-accounts/commit/?id=829e2a09e7d4d9e6961ddf393f2042ad8eee8ea6 If the four squares icon is now consistently used to represent Windows Live / Microsoft Account, then I am happy to use it.
I think some icon is better than nothing. Nothing just looks broken. I agree that Microsoft was never good at branding anything, and that it's hard to pick a singular icon, but the MSN butterfly, Microsoft logo, or Windows logo are all acceptable choices.
The extra whitespace does indeed feel unbalanced. But I think doing a watermark like symbol would be better. https://raw.github.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/master/system-settings/online-accounts/watermark.png

It has been more than a year now. Let's decide one way or another. :) Shall we rename "Windows Live" to "Microsoft Account"? It might look a bit strange to have both "Microsoft Account" and "Microsoft Exchange" in the UI, but ... *shrug* Jakub, are you happy with these icons? The old butterfly logo does seem to have fallen out of favour, so I am happy to go with the four squares logo.

I'm not intimately familiar with Microsoft branding, but the four squares (as used in [1]) seem to be the way they're going, so sure. [1] http://www.microsoft.com/en-GB/account/default.aspx
