The biggest reason I use Totem for music playback is that it has a great (IMHO) selection of visualization plugins, something VLC for Linux is sadly lacking.

BUT-

If an mp3 file has an embedded cover art image, the selected visualizer does not work. 

Solution possibilities-

1) Switch on/off showing cover art
2) Allow visualizations priority over cover art if set
