Description semen.starykh 2013-04-10 15:35:33 UTC
When I start VPN connection manually everything works correctly.
When I try to enable "Automatically connect to VPN when using this connection" feature NetworkManager can't connect to ethernet network after reboot (Looks like it tries and then says "Disconnected - you are now offline"). If I try to start ethernet connection manually (in applet menu) it connects to ethernet and VPN automatically (everything works fine).

OS: Xubuntu 13.04 Beta 2 with updates.

What desktop environment are you using? What's happening is that NetworkManager cannot find any UI agent to provide the password:

Apr 10 21:53:08 bloknot NetworkManager[981]: <error> [1365605588.406903]
[nm-vpn-connection.c:1374] get_secrets_cb(): Failed to request VPN secrets #2:
(6) No agents were available for this request.

That would be understandable before login, because before login there is no agent to provide the password, since the password is usually stored in your desktop environment's keyring (ie for GNOME it's gnome-keyring, for KDE it's KWallet, etc).

If you want the PPTP connection to start immediately at bootup, you can make the passwords system-wide (they will be stored in /etc) but they have to be stored as plaintext, because before login there's no way to retrieve a password from secure storage or any kind, because there's no way to ask the user for the password to unlock secure storage, etc...

Given all that, does this problem still happen after login? In any case, this is a problem with the desktop environments' network applet/indicator, because it's not registering itself. That could be because no applet/indicator is running because nobody is logged in, or it could be a bug in the applet/indicator.

To be clearer, NetworkManager will periodically retry the connection (including the PPTP VPN). I expect it to fail until you log in, and then after you've logged in, without you having to do anything, I would expect it to succeed, because a password agent (ie, nm-applet or something else) is now running to provide the password.

I see you're running Xubuntu, so that agent could be nm-applet. After you're logged in, can you run "ps ax | grep nm-applet" to confirm that? Thanks!

Yes, I am using nm-applet. It starts after login... and I wish NetworkManager automatically connect to LAN (using DHCP) and VPN after login, not after boot system. But currently it can autoconnect to ethernet network only. If I try to enable "Automatically connect to VPN when using this connection" option it can't connect to ethernet after login (or after cable reconnection, Disabling-Enabling networking in nm-applet's menu) It just tries to connect periodically and says "Disconnected - you are now offline". On the other hand, if I click on ethernet connection title in nm-applet's menu it connects to LAN and VPN successfully.

Looks like it is Xubuntu specific trouble.
Comment 4 Dan Williams 2013-04-22 19:55:33 UTC
Arguably though, NM shouldn't try connecting a network connection that has an auto-connect VPN attached, when the only user the VPN connection can be started for isn't logged in. So I think we can certainly make NM smarter here.

(note for NM developers) basically when doing the Policy's get_best_auto checks, the code would also look at the secondary VPN connections and if the secondary VPN has 'permissions' in the Connection setting, and the permissions list a user that's not logged in, then we don't start that connection. Of course we'd also want to trigger the get_best_auto checks when the sessions change too, so that when the user did log in, we'd retry the connection immediately.

NM bugzilla reorganization... sorry for the bug spam.
Comment 6 Bug Report 2013-05-31 14:14:01 UTC
I've got exactly the same problem on Debian testing with xfce for desktop environment on a laptop with wifi connections. VPN never successfully reconnects upon suspend/hibernate which I do a lot nor it auto connects upon system restart to the VPN network. When the 'automatically connect to VPN...' option is selected connecting to wifi network fails with network disconnected message.

When it fails, what does syslog say? NM should be logging something about why the VPN failed.

I have this issue, with NetworkManager 1.8.6. With the "automatically connect to VPN when using this connection" option checked, there is no network connection until I click the applet icon and click "Wired connection 1". If I do nothing, though, it does automatically connect five minutes after login. I some possible duplicates, or similar bugs:

Bug 753106 - Allow network independent auto connect for VPN connections
Bug 766841 - Network Manager Fails to Automatically Connect to VPN After User Login
Bug 784644 - Wi-Fi reconnect issue with VPN autoconnect
Bug 785699 - NetworkManager disconnects primary connection if VPN connection which had been configured to connect automatically fails
Bug 787824 - DHCP configuration without default gateway will not allow NM managed VPN clients to connect
Bug 789626 - auto connect setting is ignored

Thanks to DragoBirra on reddit, I can now narrow down the issue. If I edit the VPN connection, go to the VPN tab, click the button at the right side, and switch it from the default "Store the password for only this user" to "Store the password for all users", auto-connect with VPN now works!

Here's the reddit thread where some other users mentioned they had the issue. At least some people just ignore it. https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/83pbzo/vpn_users_does_automatically_connect_to_vpn_when/

Still happening with 1.10.10.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being shut down in favor of a GitLab instance.
We are closing all old bug reports and feature requests in GNOME Bugzilla which have not seen updates for a long time.

If you still use NetworkManager and if you still see this bug / want this feature in a recent and supported version of NetworkManager, then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/-/issues/

Thank you for creating this report and we are sorry it could not be implemented (workforce and time is unfortunately limited).
