Description entropy 2012-12-27 19:00:28 UTC
After upgrading to Nautilus 3.6.3 the Computer Icon disappeared from Desktop and unless I create a new launcher with the commmand "nautilus /" there is no way of getting it back (no option in dconf, gconf, or gnome-tweak-tool). I guess "Computer" now stands for "File System". While making such changes leaves way to subjective opinions whether the changes are good or bad, I surely think that making a Desktop icon disappear after an update is an unpleasant think. Please make sure the Computer Desktop icon stays where it's supposed to, I don't like the way it suddenly vanished.

Actually this bug should go under nautilus>>Desktop.

Entropy, thanks for taking the time to write this report. The "Computer" location was removed from nautilus interface. [0] That's why it is no longer shown in the desktop folder. This is not a bug.

With relation to the proposal to add a "Computer" desktop icon that would open the "/" location, I don't think it would be appropriate, for the reasons explained bellow:

- The "Computer" location ("computer://") reveals the available storage devices. Replacing the old "Computer" icon in the desktop with one that would reveal the root directory of the unix-y file system ("/") would be rather unhelpful.

- The name used by nautilus for the "/" directory is the "pretty hostname". [1] You can configure this name in System Settings > Details > Device name. Unless the Device name is "Computer", "Computer" does not stand for "File System".

Antonio, so what would you do to make a desktop icon for Computer, precisely??? When I edit the Computer Launcher with your command "computer://" it does not recognize it, it does not open a nautilus window with the available storage devices, confirming what you state about eliminating Computer from nautilus interface.
If you say it has been removed from nautilus interface (which is not really a good choice in my opinion), what's the alternative way to access it if I want to use a Computer Desktop Icon?
Please offer a solution to the problem (let's say it's not a bug), than close the bug (even if you claim it's not a bug).

This is not incomplete. It is not a bug by definition/design, hence resetting. User support is not done in Bugzilla...
Comment 6 António Fernandes 2013-01-15 19:45:01 UTC
Entropy, "computer://" is the location address, not a command. The command would be "nautilus computer://". If you use try this command, it will be recognized.

Actually, while the 'Computer' location ("computer://") has been removed from Nautilus interface, it has not been eliminated from the gvfs backend. As such, as of version 3.6, 'Computer' location still exists and has not been changed. [However, please note that the currently supported way to access your storage devices is from the sidebar "Devices" list, on the left side of nautilus windows.]

While I am happy to help you this time, https://bugzilla.gnome.org is not a support channel. Please consider one of these options on a future occasion:

- IRC: #nautilus on irc.gnome.org (more info: https://live.gnome.org/GnomeIrcChannels);

On these channels you may get more and quicker responses because your question will be read by a lot more people. Bugzilla should be reserved for bug reports, enhancement requests and other technical issues.

Antonio, thank you for replying. Actually I thought it was a bug because when I logged in the Computer Icon was not on my Desktop and there was no known way to restore it. I was just shocked that it wasn't where it should have been after the update. I didn't know it was an enhancement. All the best, e.
