In overview, I only get a black background, not the half-transparent wallpaper I'm used to. The problem started to appear some weeks ago, probably after an update.

No extensions/themes are activated. Default GTK-Theme (Adwaita).

I'm not the only one with this problem. Found a lot of people with this issue, f.e. here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12385357

Ubuntu 12.10 (fully updated)
gnome-shell 3.6.2-0ubuntu0.2
Intel GPU

Which Intel GPU is this on?
It could be caused by missing GLSL support, although that would mean a really old card (i915, ca 2004)

I have a recent Intel GPU.
Disabling nautilus as the desktop manager and re-setting the wallpapaer made the background come back.
But as soon as I set nautilus to manage the desktop and set the wallpaper it comes black again.
I do not think it has anything to do with the GL support.
Comment 4 Giovanni Campagna 2012-12-13 22:59:57 UTC
Well, if it happens only with nautilus, and not with gnome-settings-daemon, it's likely to be a nautilus bug.

I have more data.
I installed Fedora 18 on an old Lenovo laptop (X60) which has an ancient Intel card.
On that laptop I use nautilus to draw the desktop as well, but the problem is not present there.

However I noticed that the lock screen also shows the laptop desk (including icons which is ugly, but I digress), my main laptop that has the balc activities screen instead also have a completely black lock screen with clock superimposed.

What other data do you need to fix this issue?

This should now be finally fixed in 3.7.90/git master.
