Description spam 2012-11-02 01:27:59 UTC
As much as I hate to say it, power and screen management in gnome isn't up to par with other desktop environments. It's not granular, or consistent as it needs to be.

Specific examples include:

1.) Multiple screens to manage the screen's idle times, power menu, brightness, etc...

Specifically, there's two menu's One, the 'Power' Menu, located on the top right of the tray, as well as the 'Brightness & Lock' menu, located within the system settings.

After discussing with members in #gnome-shell, we came to the conclusion

"20:59	hashem	B&L has brightness, screen timeout, and lock screen timeout. Display has resolution and rotation. Power has sleep and battery meter, with a link to brightness....
21:05	hashem	It makes sense to me to group all the timeouts together: lock, screen, sleep. They're a natural progression."

2.) Within the 'Brightness & Lock' screen, theres no way to watch a movie for longer than 1 hour.

What i mean by that, is that currently there is a drop down menu, that has times from 1 minute-1hour no way to watch a movie longer than that without your screen going to sleep.

Screenshots to come- stay tuned.

These seem to be control center bugs, not shell ones.

I agree with point 2 and we have some plans that will help to deal with this (see https://live.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings/Power#Design_Updates).

I'm not entirely sure about point 1. Can you explain why you would want "multiple screens to manage the screen's idle times, power menu, brightness,
etc"? What functionality are you looking for, and why?
