Description Severo Raz 2012-10-17 15:36:59 UTC
Sometimes when my computer accidentally disconnects from the network, it
re-attempts to connect and if it is still unsuccessful, it will ask me for the
network password.

The password I have entered in the settings is correct, and until I don't
change it, I do not want Network Manager to ask me for another one.

So, I do not know if to mark this as an enhancement or a bug, because it is
unwanted behavior but I presume it was done on purpose.

Current behavior: If network manager cannot connect to a network after several
attempts, it will ask for the network's password.

Expected behavior: Never ask for password, the user will change it when needed.
Re-attempt to connect silently, without disturbing the user. At most, insinuate the user that the password may be wrong.

This text is copied from bug 668868 as per request of Pavel Simerda.

There are many bug reports that seem to talk about this behavior:
bug 601916, bug 670631 and bug 665680.

I almost forgot to attach the image that reminded me to make this bug report

Make sure this bug report is related to the actual nm-applet developed as part of the NetworkManager project and not for example Gnome Shell network-indicator.
Comment 3 Severo Raz 2012-10-29 05:36:38 UTC
Well the problem is also present in Unity - as the screenshot shows - so it is definitely not exclusive to Gnome-Shell or _vice versa_. Is there any other component I should check against?

Thanks

This bug is also present on kde.

My case:
It's verry annoying, since our WLAN AP have to restart after some time. If the restarting takes some time (more than 1-2 minutes), NetworkManager shows the password dialogue. When I'm on a jouney and the WLAN AP restarts, I can't access my data at home anymore (owncloud) because NetworkManager doesn't reconnect automatically.

Please fix it.

This looks like a good idea but can't be solved in the NetworkManager daemon and therefore not centrally, as there are 3+ GUI tools for NM.
Comment 13 Severo Raz 2013-02-13 01:13:58 UTC
So to solve this issue both the daemon and the GUI have to be fixed? Where should the problem be?
Comment 14 André Klapper 2020-11-12 14:25:32 UTC
bugzilla.gnome.org is being shut down in favor of a GitLab instance.
We are closing all old bug reports and feature requests in GNOME Bugzilla which have not seen updates for a long time.

If you still use NetworkManager and if you still see this bug / want this feature in a recent and supported version of NetworkManager, then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/-/issues/

Thank you for creating this report and we are sorry it could not be implemented (workforce and time is unfortunately limited).
