I just downloaded 2.8 and it is really slow compared with 2.6, specifically:

@  scrolling canvas with scroll bars causes artefacts, usually copies of horizontal stripes being redrawn

@  selection rectangles in Selection, Cropping, etc. lag the pointer quite markedly

@  trying to resize selection rectangles is frustrating as the hotspot rectangle on a side noticeably lags the >|, etc. pointers

@  attempting to draw with the Pencil tool is nightmarish as the pointer jerks around so much it is impossible to draw a smooth curve

@  moving the image on the canvas is worst of all as you can see painful redraw strips proceeding slowly down the window

... and so on.
